Are cat litter box odor preventers safe and effective for my cat?

Baking soda is definitely a viable option. I wouldn't add any sort of out side products into the litter. I would just choose a litter that is effective at disguising unwanted odors. The Arm and Hammer Double Duty and the Ultra are both really effective in my opinion at accomplishing this. There are also covered litter boxes that have little filters on top of them that help contain some of the odor. Another thing you might want to consider trying is to get one of those deodorizer jars and simply leave one open right next to the litter box. This will absorb a good portion of the unwanted odor. Hopefully, the new litter alone will solve your not-burying problem. Hope this make sense.

The only air "fresheners" we worry about with cats are essential oils. Don't forget that cats' sense of smell is much better than ours, so an air freshener that is too strong can actually deter a cat from wanting to go in the room with it. The most important thing in keeping the room smelling good is scooping the litter box at least once daily and cleaning the entire thing (changing the litter completely) at least once weekly. I also noticed that you have Creamcicle listed at unneutered. Getting him neutered will also decrease the odor of his urine which might be helpful. Good luck! Scents aren't necessarily dangerous, but cat's have a much more sensitive sense of smell than we do. If your kitties decide that the scent of the litter box liners isn't nice, they will decide to go potty somewhere else! Also, some cats are very sensitive to certain scents and can have upper or lower respiratory issues with this. It can also cause flare ups in cats that have been diagnosed with feline asthma. So, I would not recommend using scented bags, but if you do, just watch them all very closely for any changes.

Yes it should be safe to use. I don't know how well it will work though. I think you should try some Feliway diffusers and get a second litter box with a different type of litter to put in a different location. He may not like the one you are currently using. I've never heard of this litter causing a burning smell before, but if it is strong enough to bother you or is affecting your cat, switching back to the other litter may be a good idea. You can also see if an air purifier in the room helps as well. If you notice any signs of respiratory distress in your cat such as sneezing, trouble breathing, panting, coughing, etc, then moving Sweetie to another well ventilated room and changing the litter is best.

Small amounts of cat litter can pass through a larger dogs digestive tract fairly uneventfully. If hazel snuck in the box and ate some of the cat poop covered in litter that is pretty small amount and I wouldn't worry. Dogs love cat poop and most if given access will sample it regularly. You could try turning the cat box to face the wall with enough room for the cat to get in, but close enough to the wall that hazel s head couldn't fit. Or you may need to block the area off in someway so only cat can fit through to use the box - maybe a baby gate?

The cooking oil and baking soda trick is fine to try, but if she is interested in licking it then I would not continue as you don’t want her ingesting any litter by accident. Personally I would just try a different brand of litter to see if it works any differently, it consider lining the litter box with a plastic bag for easy Clean up.
