How to control cat litter box odor when my cat doesn't bury?

They may not like the feeling of the chips on their paws. I would try some clumping litter instead. SOme cats don;t like their poo and will try to get out of the box as fast as possible after doing their business....as they are so grossed out by it. So try the clumping litter and remove the poo regularly, every day., whether they bury it or not.

Hartz, in my opinion , is not a great brand but it would not hurt trying these out. The best odor prevention, however, is using clumping litter and removing the soiled clumps and the bowel movements every day. Your cat might not like the smell of any litter deodorizer and then might avoid using the litter box. Start with a tiny amount to get the cat used to it.

You can put some in a pouch on or near the cat litter. There are also carbon filters you can get to insert in the litter box to absorb odors. I wouldn't recommend adding to the litter. Cats are extremely picky about their litter, and if you mix it in, Lio may refuse to use it.

I love that you have already switched to the unscented litter as that can be a big problem for many cats. Putting the litter box in the shower is a great idea. I would also make sure to clean up the spots he went outside the litterbox using an enzymatic pet stain cleaner to ensure he does not keep smelling urine/feces there and think that it is akin to a litterbox. Other things, like cleaning the litter box often, having multiple litterboxes which are different types of boxes, and trying different types of litter (such as fine-grain litter) may also help you figure out what type of litter Mittens likes. While it certainly sounds like Mittens is having trouble getting used to his new litterbox, it is important to remember that internal diseases (like organ, hormonal, or orthopedic diseases, among other possible causes) can cause Mittens to have a hard time making it into the litterbox so it is important to take Mittens to your vet for evaluation to make sure we are not missing something else that is making it hard for Mittens to make it to the litterbox. The only air "fresheners" we worry about with cats are essential oils. I've included more information about that below. http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/blog/essential-oils-cats/ Any other air fresheners are fine unless your cat has asthma or is sensitive to certain scents. Don't forget that cats' sense of smell is much better than ours, so an air freshener that is too strong can actually deter a cat from wanting to go in the room with it. The most important thing in keeping the room smelling good is scooping the litter box at least once daily and cleaning the entire thing (changing the litter completely) at least once weekly. I also noticed that you have Creamcicle listed at unneutered. Getting him neutered will also decrease the odor of his urine which might be helpful. Good luck! It sounds like your new cat may be a digger! I highly recommend purchasing a litter box that has tall sides or an enclosed lid to help keep the litter better contained. You can also place a litter matter under it to help catch any litter that may be falling out. If you've only gotten her today she's likely still adjusting to her new home. I would give her a few weeks to settle in completely. If she doesn't go potty at all in the next day or so, or seems ill or in distress, a vet visit is also a good idea (and is a good idea with any new pet regardless!)

I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this with scruff. I would consider Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter (https://www.drelseys.com/shop/cat-attract/) or additive (https://www.drelseys.com/shop/ultra-litter-attractant/). I would also consider covering part of a litterbox in sand or dirt to attract Scruff if she is used to going outside. Some cats hate covered litter boxes and some love them. I would try to use the hints of where Scruff is going to try to replicate those conditions in the litterbox. If she is going in the bath tub or on a tile floor, then leave half of the litter box empty for her go on a hard surface. If she likes soft surfaces, then try shredded paper or a soft paper litter.
