What safe air fresheners can I use near my cat's litter box?

Hello. For the most part, these diffusers are safe for cats, as long as there are regular air exchanges & some fresh air coming in all day. Most HVAC systems have automatic air exchanges, but if the weather is good, keeping a window cracked a bit is perfect. Some cats are very sensitive to odors, some do not care for them at all, so as long as the cats are not confined to a closed in room & can move to a different area, there is no harm in essential oils. One caveat, we have a diffuser mounted on a wall in our clinic & it malfunctioned ( exploded ) sending the contents all over a hallway. Fortunately, none of the office cats seemed to have walked through this, but that would be a concern if a cat ingests any of this. But otherwise, I would just enjoy the fragrance of your choice. I would not use a litter that has an aroma on a cat who is sensitive. I am not sure if you are able to purchase this certain litter system but if you are able to the Breeze litter system is great. Hello. In general, the use of essential oils is contraindicated for indoor pets. If you keep the windows open for plenty of fresh air it kind of defeats the purpose of the lavender. A better option is to use a cat appeasing pheromone. I like Feliway as you plug it into an outlet in as many rooms as Shadow occupies, & it emits a undetectable scent that has calming properties to cats. I would also start him on a calming supplement like Zylkene made by Vetoquinol. Lastly, make sure Shadow is not having actual physical problems in the litter box. You do not say if his issues are with defecation or urination, but some male cats can develop a form of cystitis that if not addressed quickly can result in a urinary blockage, a life threatening condition. If he is defecating outside the box, adding another box in another location, using a product called Cat Attract in the box, & the Feliway often helps. Scents aren't necessarily dangerous, but cat's have a much more sensitive sense of smell than we do. If your kitties decide that the scent of the litter box liners isn't nice, they will decide to go potty somewhere else! Also, some cats are very sensitive to certain scents and can have upper or lower respiratory issues with this. It can also cause flare ups in cats that have been diagnosed with feline asthma. So, I would not recommend using scented bags, but if you do, just watch them all very closely for any changes.

I would not recommend using essential oils, cats are very sensitive to them and certain ones are highly toxic. I will be honest, I don't use a special cleaner in my home as a vet. I just don't let my animals into the clean area until it's completely dried, and I have never had an issue. Brands I use in New Zealand are likely different from ones you can get in the US, but even the cleaners you get at the grocery store are safe to use around your cat. Just don't let George in the area until it's completely dried. I hope this helps!

Yes, it is absolutely fine to continue using your normal household cleaners - Lysol included - as long as Frankie does not directly inhale or ingest any of these substances. Rinsing his litter box with dish soap after spraying with Lysol is also okay. :-)

I've never heard of this litter causing a burning smell before, but if it is strong enough to bother you or is affecting your cat, switching back to the other litter may be a good idea. You can also see if an air purifier in the room helps as well. If you notice any signs of respiratory distress in your cat such as sneezing, trouble breathing, panting, coughing, etc, then moving Sweetie to another well ventilated room and changing the litter is best.
