My bird's beak has a hole from a toy. Will it heal or needs a vet?

He should be examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating birds. That hole/wound should be checked for infection and treated if necessary. Sometimes, lovebirds can inadvertently cause trauma during "beak play" but if Malik is alone, it may be infection or other trauma.

The beak erosions should be assessed by a veterinarian, as am concerned this could be a clinical sign of an beak infection or even liver disease. Also a little concerning is the thickening of the cere and tan/brown color. A veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.

Oh goodness. Poor little Guy. Unfortunately the pictures are too blurry to really visualize the lesion. I would worry about infection or possible self trauma. Is he rubbing his beak on anything in the cage? Is there crust or discharge from the nostril? If so then he may have an upper respiratory infection and should be seen my an avian veterinarian to develop a treatment plans. I hope he improves quickly .

Boy, you wouldn't believe how often we see this happen! Birds are so curious and they have such strong little beaks! Having that checked by a vet would be best. However, if there is no damage to the beak- holes, cracked pieces etc and no damage to the soft tissues inside the mouth (sometimes these toys will cut into the soft skin on the inside of the beak), then your little friend should be fine!

Any other animals that could have possible harmed her, other birds or cats? Monitor appetite and activity. If lesion grows or Dawn becomes weak or stops eating, a veterinary visit is recommended. Monitor for appetite and actual ingestion of food as they will often play with the food and not eat. Easiest to monitor fecal production. Pain medication and antibiotics can be provided during your veterinary visit if deemed necessary. Good luck.

If the break is very small and isn't bothersome or painful, you may just want to leave it alone to eventually grow out and heal. Keeping the area clean, dry, and free of debris can help it to heal and prevent infection. If the beak is actively hanging open, the crack is very large, or it becomes painful or is impeding your bird's ability to eat or drink, it will need to be seen by a vet for repair and treatment as it can become infected or impede normal ability. Keeping your bird indoors until the beak starts to heal is best to avoid further injury while your bird is out and about (if he's not kept in a cage during the day.)
