My lovebird has a scab on its beak that keeps growing. Is it serious?

The pictures are pretty good. Doremon seems to have a lesion over the right eye, but also near the left nostril and cere. It appears to be a trauma. Not sure if he could have fallen off the perch or injured himself otherwise. If he is still eating and active, i think you have time to monitor the situation. You might want to contact the seller to let them know. If the lesion continues to progress or Doremon stops eating or becomes lethargic, I would seek input from an avian veterinarian.

Hi there, These wounds appear superficial from the photograph. It would be best to have him seen by a doctor familiar with birds for a full physical to ensure he doesn't have any underlying bruises or fractures from the fights. Thanks for reaching out about Red. Without a photo it is difficult to give any further advise, except a veterinary visit is needed as soon as possible. Blood on the head is a possible trauma from a fall or aggression by another animal, bleeding blood feathers, self induced trauma, a few viral diseases (PBFD, polyoma) just to list a few. Separate from the other birds, provide heat support in the 80-85 F range, ensure food/water is within reach. Syringe water if not drinking. Good luck.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). Giving the upper eyelid lesion as well a skin infection is more likely. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Your vet may want to perform a skin scrape to identify underlying cause more specifically. Disinfection can possibly be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. This looks like a fibroid tumor but I cannot be certain of this just by looking at a photo. Fibroids are benign but it could also be malignant tumor of some sort or a cyst. Thanks for reaching out about Angel. Is there aggression in the cage, could this be caused by other birds? If so, isolation to reduce further trauma. Scabs can also be due to scaly beak and leg mites, which are contagious to other birds, more common if this or other birds are recently acquired. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Some local pet stores could have remedies, but probably not as effective as the vet. Good luck.
