My cockatoo has a cracked beak. Are there any safe home remedies?

If you believe his beak is broken or cracked, I would seek veterinary attention for him. A cracked beak is like a broken tooth and as bone and nerve endings are connected to the beak, such injuries are painful. A cracked beak won't grow together, but will grow out over time. Amputated or torn off beaks, as well as fractured beaks, will not grow back, but can be repaired. Depending on the severity, your vet may use special, nontoxic glue and bandage a broken / cracked beak. DO NOT use glue at home, as most glues are toxic to birds. I hope this is helpful!

Provide food and water and minimize stress and handling once separated. I would recommend taking him to an avian veterinarian to assess the severity of the injury and determine what treatment may be needed. Beak cracking can be due to a number of things including injuries or even poor diet. If the beak is badly broken or cracked to the point is is bleeding, causing pain, or keeping Chikcy from eating, seeking veterinary care is best. Making sure he is on a balanced diet can also help ensure the beak stays healthy and grows well.

You can use a warm washcloth to soak and clean the beak after each feeding. Provide a mineral block, concrete perches or bird safe chew toys to maintain beak length. If it is cracked, overgrown or misaligned then Blue will need to be physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet.

Feed an appropriate pelleted diet supplemented with a fortified seed mix. Use perches of different diameters to exercise the feet. A flat perch platform can also be used to make perching easier. A broken nail can be clipped off at the break. Minor bleeding can be controlled with gentle pressure and some plain cornstarch.

This may have been due to infection, trauma or poor nutrition. You would need to have the bird examined by an experienced avian veterinarian for a diagnosis. Treatment will depend on that diagnosis. Antibiotics may be needed in addition to a proper diet. In the meantime, keep the bird warm and as stress free as possible. if it is caged with others, house it singly. Offer a quality commercial pelleted diet. you may need to soak or moisten in to make eating easier. Offer small amounts of diced fresh fruits and vegetables as well as foods such as boiled egg, beans and plain pastas. A mineral block and cuttlebone should also be made available.

Keep it clean and dry. You can dab it with diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) daily. If it doesn't begin to heal in a few days or is actively bleeding, see your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite or loose droppings. These are also symptoms that should be addressed by your vet.
