My senior budgie has a hole in his beak. Is a vet visit safe?

Unfortunately from your photos I can't tell very clearly what is going on with the beak. If the beaks are overgrowing or impeding the chicks' ability to eat or drink, then I would have a vet take a look and trim the beaks down so that they can grow back into a more normal shape. If there is a growth, swelling, or discharge, it could indicate an issue such as an infection or underlying problem which should be treated by a vet. If the babies are otherwise healthy, eating, growing and there is no discharge, etc, then just keeping an eye on the beaks may be fine, but if they continue to grow oddly or become problemsome to your birds, having a vet look is always best.

Thanks for reaching out about Romeo and including photos. The concern would be if the hole penetrates into the sublingual space and sets up an infection. As the beak grows, the hole should move rostrally and disappear (could take months). A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and start preventative antibiotics. Good luck.

Hello, You're correct in that Rocky's beak is very abnormal appearing. I worry the crusting on the ceres (the part above the beak) could be due to mites, a nutritional deficiency, or a respiratory infection. The beak's lopsided appearance could be due to liver or nutritional disease. I recommend taking Rocky to his veterinarian. They can best guide you after a physical exam. I hope this is helpful. Oh goodness. Poor little Guy. Unfortunately the pictures are too blurry to really visualize the lesion. I would worry about infection or possible self trauma. Is he rubbing his beak on anything in the cage? Is there crust or discharge from the nostril? If so then he may have an upper respiratory infection and should be seen my an avian veterinarian to develop a treatment plans. I hope he improves quickly .

As long as it is just a little overgrown and she can still eat well (can tell by having the brown or green part of the poop present as they can pretend to eat) there is not a rush to get into the vet. It will need to be clipped and shaped if it gets really long though. Sometimes this can happen if a bird is eating only seeds so try to see if Turtle can be convinced to eat a pelleted diet by pretending to eat it yourself often around her and some patience.
