My lovebird has a hole in its beak near the nostril. What should I do?

Thanks for reaching out about Romeo and including photos. The concern would be if the hole penetrates into the sublingual space and sets up an infection. As the beak grows, the hole should move rostrally and disappear (could take months). A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and start preventative antibiotics. Good luck.

Oh goodness. Poor little Guy. Unfortunately the pictures are too blurry to really visualize the lesion. I would worry about infection or possible self trauma. Is he rubbing his beak on anything in the cage? Is there crust or discharge from the nostril? If so then he may have an upper respiratory infection and should be seen my an avian veterinarian to develop a treatment plans. I hope he improves quickly .

This may have been due to infection, trauma or poor nutrition. You would need to have the bird examined by an experienced avian veterinarian for a diagnosis. Treatment will depend on that diagnosis. Antibiotics may be needed in addition to a proper diet. In the meantime, keep the bird warm and as stress free as possible. if it is caged with others, house it singly. Offer a quality commercial pelleted diet. you may need to soak or moisten in to make eating easier. Offer small amounts of diced fresh fruits and vegetables as well as foods such as boiled egg, beans and plain pastas. A mineral block and cuttlebone should also be made available.

Provide food and water and minimize stress and handling once separated. I would recommend taking him to an avian veterinarian to assess the severity of the injury and determine what treatment may be needed. Some crusting can happen when a bird is ready to mate, but that looks a bit more than that -- It is possible your bird has a respiratory issue going on, a fungal infection taking hold in the nostrils, or another type of infection/illness. It would be best to bring him to a vet to have the area flushed out and treatment started for any underlying infection. Separating him to a hospital cage that is kept warm and with easy access to food and water may also help to prevent the spread of any illness and to keep Ocean comfortable if your other parakeet is picking on him until you can be seen by your vet. You can also use a warm washcloth to try and remove any debris to make him more comfortable.

Any other animals that could have possible harmed her, other birds or cats? Monitor appetite and activity. If lesion grows or Dawn becomes weak or stops eating, a veterinary visit is recommended. Mochi's beak looks a little long but otherwise healthy. Have your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet trim it if necessary. Provide a mineral block, chew toys and concrete perches to help keep beak and nails trimmed.
