What to do for a baby owl with a broken wing when no vet is near?

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 4 lbs

I live in Uganda, and are way too far from a vet. I found a baby owl who had a fractured wing. The bone is sticking out, but there is no blood. It is tired, and seems woozy. What can I do?

Hello, and thanks for using Petcoach (now Boop). Unfortunately, with a complicated fracture such as that, and if the owl is acting woozy, it is likely in shock and unlikely to survive without veterinary care. If you really want to help save this owl, it's best to find someone to transport it to the nearest veterinarian.

If you can do so safely and gently, you may be able to place a gentle tape to stabilize the wing against the body. I'm including a link to a website with some more information on this - but I really want to stress that this bird should be seen by a vet, and without vet care it is very likely to die. However, I used to live in West Africa and understand how difficult it can be to reach a vet if there isn't one in your area.

You might have to travel to the vet as this is probably beyond what can be done at home. A warm environment, remove perches to prevent further falling. Check local and state wildlife laws first to make sure you are allowed to keep Angel. Next, contact the local veterinary clinic and ask for the contact information of nearby wildlife rehabilitator. If you are legally prohibited from keeping wildlife, a rehabber will give Angel the best chance at treatment and recovery. If you are allowed to keep Angel, a rehabber should be able to direct you to a veterinarian who may be able to help out. Any discount or assistance would be at the sole discretion of the veterinarian or specialist.

It is possible that Tweety has a broken wing, however, in a 12 day old bird it could also be a "conformational abnormality", meaning Tweety may have been born with one wing that did not develop properly. If you can get her to a veterinarian she can be examined to determine what is causing her to hold her wing that way. They may also want to take an x-ray to get a better look at the bones of the wing. If it is broken a veterinarian will usually splint it or wrap it in a special bandage to allow it to heal. In a young bird it usually only takes around 4-6 weeks to heal from a break. You should check to see if there are any wild life rehabilitation services or animal control services in your area. You can drop the dove off with them and they normally don't charge you. If you do not have one near you, the best thing would be to take him to a veterinarian. Some veterinarians treat wild life at no cost or discounted cost. You should call around to different veterinary clinics to see what they would charge you. The veterinarian would start off by doing an exam and possible xray of the wing. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do other than try to keep the bird calm and quiet. I would avoid handling it as birds can pass illnesses to people and other pets. Trying to find a wildlife rehab that can take it ASAP is best!
