My baby bird's air sac burst. Can it heal itself or needs a vet?

Pet's info: Bird | Wild Bird | Male | unneutered | 5 days old

EMERGENCY. IT'S TOO LATE TO TAKE TO THE VET. The airsac in the cheat area has burst. There's a small ball of air trapped still and I have no experience in leaking that air out by puncturing. Can I leave it be till the morning or does it heal itself. What if I puncture a vein. The bird is maybe a WEEK old. What if I injure it further since it's a rescue sparrow nestling that has an injured leg. It hasn't grown in size the last three days that I've had it only feather. HELP

Birds will not die from a ruptured air sac. The concern is why did it rupture. That could be a problem. You should not lance the air sac as baby birds have poor immune systems and contamination/infection can be serious. See a veterinarian tomorrow.

Aspergillosis would not be common in a newly hatched bird; air sac rupture can heal quickly and easily with proper veterinary treatment. At this time, as long as she is eating, drinking, and breathing well, try not to worry. If you notice the bulge growing larger, Kuka develops respiratory distress or stops eating please reach out to us and we will do our best to help. Otherwise, I would plan to get her to a veterinarian Monday.

Providing heat and humidity support are very important. Concerns are over some underlying disease (bacterial, viral, developmental) and that is why hen kicked it out of the nest. A veterinary visit might be needed to assess and determine if antibiotics might be needed. Good luck.

Without a physical exam, it is difficult to determine if amputation is needed. If so, this is not something that should be attempted at home. Most general practice veterinarians will be able to assess the bird's injuries and dispense medication for pain or infection. Although it would be ideal, you don't "need" an avian vet.
