Why is my baby sparrow not chirping after I accidentally overfed it?

Thanks for reaching out about Zazu. A major concern would be aspiration of food making it difficult for Zazu to breath. A veterinary visit is highly recommended as soon as possible. Heat support, antibiotics and possibly anti-fungal medications, fluid therapy and nutritional support are needed. Aspiration of the trachea to clean might also help. The thump into the window appears to have caused physical injury and possibly neurological damage. This would have to be confirmed by a veterinarian. The bird may recover, but it could take some time and may require extensive supportive care. Ideally, it should be examined by a wildlife veterinarian or relinquished to an experienced wildlife rehabilitator. If treatment is not possible, humane euthanasia may have to be considered. Keep it warm and as stress free as possible. Prop the bird up with a towel and wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling. Use a dropper or small syringe to provide water. Offer a fortified seed mix for finches. You can also try a handfeeding formula for extra nutrition.

Baby birds can be very challenging to rehab without specific training. If you have an opportunity to take it to a wildlife rehab facility or expert, do so. If not, you can try worms as they will have more protein than rice and it might perk up with this diet. Good luck!

Falling can also cause some internal damage such of hurting ribs, lungs or air sacs. Monitor appetite and water consumption. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a treatment plan. It's possible you could be overfilling his crop, causing him to regurgitate up some of the extra food. Checking his crop (located on the neck, it will feel like a little balloon when full, or be visible if his feathers haven't grown in) can alert you if he's full or not. If it's full, waiting a bit to feed him again or decreasing the amount fed and just feeding more often can help. If his crop is always full, or he is unable to keep any food down, having a vet take a look to rule out issues such as obstruction or illness is best.

Hey there, I answered your question yesterday! Glad to see Captain Jack is still hanging in there! :) As far as going crazy- do you mean he's just being very vocal and active? That may be a great sign that he is doing well! He may have been less vocal and active when you found him because he was weaker at that time. As far as opening his mouth to chirp, I can't say for sure whether or not that means anything. I would have to physically see him and examine him. If he was dropped off at a hospital when I was doing wildlife work, I would listen to him with my stethoscope and take an x-ray to look at his lung fields when he was admitted to decide if I was going to use antibiotics or not. For the next day and a half you have him, try to keep him continually warm and feed him whenever he likes. When I'm raising baby birds at home, I like to fill old socks with rice and microwave them until they're just barely warm to the touch on the inside of my wrist (just like baby bottle temperatures, if you're familiar with that) to keep inside whatever I'm using for a little nest container.
