My bird is puffed up and bleeding on its perch. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male

Hi! So I came to find my bird with barely any food and dirty water bowl and him puffed up sitting. I brought him in, put him in a warm place, cleaned his food and water and changed it. He looks a bit better. But. I found lots of drips of blood on his perch and I have no idea what it is! (Actually, he has a swing that has rocks/cuttle on it and he eats it) So maybe that scratched his foot which caused it to bleed? Please reply soon

Thanks for reaching out about Blueberry. If lethargic and weak, a veterinary visit is recommended to provide some support care but also to investigate the bleeding, and possible antibiotics.

Hello. Your bird is sick, but there is no way to diagnose the problem in this forum. It may be infectious, metabolic, parasitic or even neoplastic. Thanks for reaching out about Blue and including photos. A veterinary visit is recommended as soon as you can arrange. Checking to ensure beak is not damaged is important. Monitor for appetite and actual ingestion of food as they will often play with the food and not eat. Easiest to monitor fecal production. Pain medication and antibiotics can be provided during your veterinary visit if deemed necessary. Good luck.

Blood on the head is a possible trauma from a fall or aggression by another animal, bleeding blood feathers, self induced trauma, a few viral diseases (PBFD, polyoma) just to list a few. Separate from the other birds, provide heat support in the 80-85 F range, ensure food/water is within reach. Syringe water if not drinking. Good luck.

Hello. I am very sorry to hear that Blue is having such trouble. This actually sounds very serious to me and I would urge you to take Blue to a veterinarian as soon as possible. I wouldn’t wait, since birds can deteriorate and die very quickly and Blue already sounds quite unstable. I’m sorry to relay this news and wish I had an easy solution for you. In the meantime, please keep Blue warm and quiet in a small cage or box. If he’s alert enough to eat, offer whatever he wants or is willing to eat. Best of luck.
