My horse is lonely and paces. How can I safely socialize him?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Horse | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 1100 lbs

I don't know what to do with Cloud, he keeps pacing back and forth around his paddock. He starts whinnying to the other horses whenever he sees them. When I go down to feed him at night he's always hanging his head down and looks sad. I think he's suffering from loneliness, but we've tried putting him with one of our mares and her foal it ended up horribly and we ended up loosing one of the foals because of Cloud then he kept being hostile towards the mate! What should I do?

I would see if you could turn Cloud out with another gelding as there is less likely to be conflict that way. Another option would be to turn him out next to another horse even if they aren't in the same paddock.
