I have a mare and just got a new gelding about 1 week ago. My mare has been very mean and aggressive to the gelding. She chases him around relentlessly and kicks/ bites him, guards the water, and won’t let him near the shelter. I knew there would be some fighting but it doesn’t seem to be settling down. Is there anything I can do to help her get along better with him.

Usually they will work it out over time. This is not unusual behavior. Remember, they are individuals just like people, so there are times that no matter what, two individuals will never get along. That is just the nature of all animals. You cannot force them. This article may help you more.

You can try some calming supplements but honestly, they don't work well in my opinion.

You can also talk to your vet about putting the mare on Regumate to regulate her heat cycles better. That may help if all else fails.
