My goat got stuck in mud and now won't use her back legs. Why not?

Mating can be quite traumatic for the female and if your goat is still very young then she could be easily hurt by the male. Hopefully it is soft tissue inflammation but potentially he may have injured a nerve. You could see if your local large animal vet can prescribe you an antinflammatory injection for her. Definitely keep him away from her.

I feel like it is unlikely that she is going into labor. Dragging the back legs can be a sign of neurologic disease. Polio or pregnancy toxemia are possible, but she needs to be examined by a vet to determine if this is the case and to receive appropriate treatment. A swollen anus could be due to inflammation or a prolapse secondary to straining. It, too, should be examined by a vet.

I would definitely be concerned enough to call a vet out for this. If she was in labor, then you would have seen signs of this (swollen vulva, fluid discharge, etc.) and it would not cause them to act this debilitated. I recommend getting her seen by a vet as soon as possible, so they can determine what the problem is. I hope that helps and Blue gets better soon.

This sounds like she may have injured her back which is very serious and needs immediate veterinary attention. If she isn’t using her rear legs this may be temporary or if the nerves have been damaged she could become permanently paralyzed. Please take her in the treatment right away. They will give medication for the pain and to reduce the inflammation around the nerves. Dogs can rupture a disc in their back and may need surgery to relieve the pressure so they can walk again. If she was run over by a horse, your dog could have been severely injured by that even if she didn't show it at the time. The only way to know for sure if anything is broken is to have x-rays, and she could have had her spine, hips, or back legs severely damaged. It is a medical emergency that she can't walk or put weight on her hind legs, and she has to see a vet now. If you don't take her into a vet now, this could be permanent. Please take her into a vet now.

I would be concerned there is an injury to the leg, such as a sprain, break, or wound, or even a neurologic/muscular issues that could be affecting her legs. If it's been going on for several months without improvement, it would be best to have a vet take a look in person to rule out any treatable issues. If no problems can be found or treated, and she is able to get around and is still eating and drinking, making sure she has easy access to food and water, and isn't being picked on by the rest of the flock may help make things easier.

Hello, I'm concerned that Hercules may have injured his back or spine somehow, which could lead to him not using his back legs well. I would recommend having him seen by a vet right away so his neurologic function to his legs can be assessed. They will likely recommend x-rays to initially image his spine, and may recommend CT or MRI imaging if they are suspicious of a herniated disc. Rest, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers, and good pain management medications are important mainstays for healing any type of back injury.
