My goat is suddenly sick, lying down, and motionless. What should I do?

I am very sorry that Goldy is sick. Unfortunately his symptoms are very vague. I really cannot tell you what is wrong with him. You really should have a vet come to see him. If he hasn't been dewormed you can start there. I really do not know what medications you have available to you to treat goats so other than deworming there is nothing else I can really recommend.

Hi there. Bloating in goats can be an emergency and will require veterinary assistance. If she is not eating or drinking, it is time to take her in. Depending on how bad it is-they may be able to pass a stomach tube or it may be surgical and require a puncture of the rumen to relieve pressure. It worries me that she is not urinating. This can happen if she is severely dehydrated but also in diseases like renal (kidney) failure (she is older) or she could have a blockage from urinary calculi. This is an emergency and you need to call your vet to come out and examine your goat or you need to take the goat to your vet. There could be many reasons for your goat's behavior such as metabolic problems, poison and also infectious diseases. All these can cause a goat to appear poisoned.

Sounds like either enterotoxemia (Clostridium spp) or parasites like tapeworms. What parasites did you treat for? Tapeworms need a special deworming medication as they are not killed with a general dewormer. Are you vaccinating against Clostridial diseases? If you have a local vet, I suggest you consult with them.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If her temp is high and she is painful or bloated in her abdomen, this could be a life threatening emergency. She may have a grain bloat, have ingested something toxic or have an infection. I recommend having a vet take a look at her as soon as possible. In the meantime try to walk her a bit and she is she is interested in browsing or chewing any hay.

Check her temperature. If she has a fever, call out your farm vet. Potential causes include infection, vitamin/mineral deficiency (namely vitamin E and selenium), parasites (the most worrisome being meningeal worm) or trauma. Keep her warm and as stress free as possible. If necessary, rig up a sling to help her get around. The easiest is a towel slung underneath her behind the front limbs. Without an exam, it is difficult to determine definitively what is happening. If her symptoms are worsening, consider an emergency vet call out or trip to the nearest veterinary ER.

Poor JJ. There are so many reasons why a goat kid would become ill and stop eating. The most likely being illness/infection, parasites, or low blood sugar. He needs to be warmed and bottle fed if he has a suckle. If not, he needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. Please try contacting your local large animal veterinarian. It is likely that he is dehydrated and feeling very ill.
