Is 5 pounds too much for my 8-month-old small breed rabbit?

Pellets should be limited to no more than 1/8 cup daily. You can feed a1 cup of vegetables per 4 pounds of body weight daily. Timothy hay or similar grasses can be offered in unlimited amounts. Alfalfa can be fed up until 7 months of age then discontinued.

They are considered adults at about 11-12 months of age. So, at 10 months old Fluffy should be almost her full adult weight. I would say she should weigh no less than 9 pounds right now. Hi there. A high portion of the rabbits diet should be coming from Timothy hay. I usually recommend 1/4 cup per day of pellets per rabbit. Depending on the breed of rabbit, this may be a normal weight. As long as she is eating, drinking, defecating and behaving normally otherwise, there is likely no cause for concern. To be absolutely sure would require a physical exam with your veterinarian.

In my experience the most common reason rabbits gain weight is due to over feeding pellets. Rabbits only need about 1/4 cup or less of pellets a day. If you are feeding more than this, I would suggest slowly decreasing the amount over several weeks. Bunnies should always have very slow diet changes to avoid gastrointestinal problems. Great questions! From weaning up to seven months of age, Lenny can have unlimited amounts of pellets and alfalfa hay. Since he can have this food in an unlimited amount, just make sure he has plenty of both at all times, replacing old food with fresh food at least once a day. Do not start introducing vegetables until he is three months of age. At that point in time, start introducing small amounts at a time. I hope this helps!
