My rabbit gained weight. Is it diet, seasonal, or a health issue?

Concentrated foods such as fruits and certain vegetables are the main causes of rabbits gaining too much weight. They can also get fat by eating too many treats and certain types of pelleted feed. Rabbits should be eating mostly grass and hay. Other foods should be fed in moderation. Feed as much timothy hay or similar grasses as possible. Limit or discontinue feeding commercial pellets. Offer about a cup of fresh greens daily. Avoid fruit and "sweet" vegetables such as corn or carrots. Try to increase Bun Bun's activity.

Hello, I would completely stop the pellets for Flopsy, hay & water only. Increasing exercise is very important, too. This may mean feeding the 2 rabbits separately, but there can be so many health problems associated with an obese rabbit, that it is important to try & get some weight off of him. Make sure that you are very careful with the treats he gets. He should only receive good greens, no fruit or high-calorie rabbit treats. Get a good food scale where you can weigh Flopsy weekly & monitor his progress. As he reaches a more normal weight, you can begin to add a few pellets back into his diet. It is important to make sure that there is no other reason for Egg to be losing or not gaining weight such as issues with his teeth or chronic hair balls. He should be eating mostly a pellet diet that you can find in pet stores as well as free access to hay. As far as additional treats, there are various treats sold in stores. Fruits and veggies should be offered in small amounts. You can try carrots, green beans, green leafy veggies, apples, pineapples, and bananas. I recommend staying away from fruits with seeds. As long as she is at a good weight and not too skinny then I wouldn’t worry about it. Most rabbits I see are over weight and a lot of the health problems are associated with their weight. She may be “saving” her appetite for her favorites. However limiting them is important so that she does eat some hay which is very important to keep a healthy GI tract. Hello, sorry to hear that your bunny is unwell. There are many causes that can result in loss of appetite, & subsequent weight loss, really too many to discuss here. But diet imbalances, dental problems, infections, hairballs, gastrointestinal blockages, & cancer can all cause weight loss. Your bunny needs a hands on exam with a veterinarian to discover the reason for the weight loss, & hopefully get things turned around quickly. This small breed rabbit should weigh between 2.5lbs and 3.5lbs. Review the diet and limit commercial pellets to no more than 1/8 cup daily. Feed as much timothy hay and similar grasses as she will eat. Avoid alfalfa if she is older than 6-7 months. Increase activity if possible.
