Can a rabies vaccine actually cause rabies in my pet rabbit?

Hello. Rabbits can be vaccinated against rabies, especially if they are to be kept outdoors & there is a threat of contact with wild animals. We use a vaccine called IMRAB for rabbits at risk, or are in petting zoos. Rabbits are very prone to developing injection site swellings & abscesses, so this is a potential problem with vaccinations in rabbits. Hello. This is a good question. Generally, no, you don’t need rabies post exposure vaccinations since rabies is very rare in rabbits. However, if your rabbit has any exposure to wildlife by going outside into your yard, has a wound you cant explain, or has been showing behavior changes or aggression, the. I would be more concerned for possible exposure. The best thing you can do is to contact your own personal physician and the health department and explain the scenario. Seek medical care for your wound at least to make sure it doesn’t get infected. If the doctor has concern, they will likely want to contact your veterinarian. Best of luck!

The main reason for vaccinating any rabbit is a fatal disease called Myxomatosis, if an unvaccinated rabbit contracts the disease (usually through mosquitoes) , it is 100% fatal. the only effective protection against this disease is this vaccine.

Hello. There is no need to worry about your cat getting rabies from a mouse. Rabies must be transmitted through a bite wound & it is very unlikely that the mouse was able to bite your cat before being killed. In addition, the rate of rabies in a mouse in NYC is almost zero. Since your dog is vaccinated against rabies (and if the vaccination is up to date) he is protected and will not contract rabies. It is also very unlikely that this squirrel had rabies. However, should your dog get a fever within the next 6 or 7 days , you should take him to the vet as squirrels can carry tularemia and the plague, which caan be transmitted to people and are potentially fatal diseases. They can be treated with antibiotics.

Thanks for reaching out. Vaccination depend on which country in which you reside. As I am in the United States and we don't have any vaccines approved for use in rabbits. But Austrailia might be different. I do believe there is a myxomatosis vaccine there and is recommended. you should consult a local veterinarian. Good luck.

In theory a vaccinated dog ( meaning current on vaccination) would have antibodies against rabies and therefore not contract the disease. However, we know that no vaccination Is 100%, and we know that there are immune systems that don’t respond the way we expect to vaccination, so there is always a chance of a vaccinated dog becoming infected with Rabies. But that chance is low. Rabies is universally fatal if infected. Both for dogs and people.
