My rabbit bit me. What should I do? Do I need a rabies injection?

Hello. Rabbits can be vaccinated against rabies, especially if they are to be kept outdoors & there is a threat of contact with wild animals. We use a vaccine called IMRAB for rabbits at risk, or are in petting zoos. Rabbits are very prone to developing injection site swellings & abscesses, so this is a potential problem with vaccinations in rabbits. I am sorry to hear about your concern for your puppy. The answer to this question will depend on the circumstances. If this is a puppy you do not know/a stray/from an uknown home then I would recommend contacting your human physician. If this is your puppy who has been in your care with no exposure to wildlife and who is acting normally/healthy then the concern for rabies is very low but it does look like there is a puncture in your skin so I would recommend consulting your human doctor as we can develop bacterial infections due to dog bites and your doctor can advise you if treatment is necessary.

Rabies can only be contracted by being bit by animal that is shedding the virus. The biggest concern for indoor only cats is if a bat has gotten into the house because we do not always know if that bat has bitten a cat. If Bonnie is not vaccinated for Rabies, then she may need to be quarantined for a period of time (usually 10 days) to make sure that she does not develop any signs of Rabies. That quarantine may be able to be in your house if you don't have any other animals or may need to be at a vet clinic or shelter. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian to discuss the specific legal requirements in your area. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Banana. Rabbits are not commonly vaccinated for rabies as the disease is extremely rare in animals such as rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks. Furthermore, there has not been a case of transmission from one these animals to humans. This decreases the need to vaccinate these animals. As far as the rabies vaccine, it is a killed virus. This means that the virus is not able to be spread by the vaccine. I hope this information helps!

But you should contact your local health department and talk to a human physician. If Austin has Rabies in the transmissible form (in the salivary glands) then he will show neurologic signs for rabies with in 10 days. Keep him quarantined for 10 days. If he dies from any cause he should be tested for Rabies if it is before the 10 days quarantine. Always keep your pets up to date on rabies and prevent them interacting with wild life and unvaccinated pets. I wish you the best!

Hi Margaux! I'm sorry that Chim Chim has been biting you. If he has been fully vaccinated against rabies, there is no worry to you about getting it from him. Now if he hasn't been fully vaccinated, i.e. he's had only one rabies vaccine and not the subsequent booster, I would give your human doctor a call. Your question about needing to be re-vaccinated is one related to human medicine, and since we are veterinarians and veterinary professionals, we cannot advise on human medical questions. Since he has had his rabies vaccination, you do not need to be worried. You do not need ARV. You do, however, need to be worried that you could get a skin infection. Just keep the wounds clean as it looks like you have done. If you notice any major redness, pain or swelling around the bite areas you need to see your human doctor.
