My cat killed a mouse. Can she get rabies if she's not vaccinated?

So there is very low risk of rabies transmission based on what you have described as making ocntact through a screen net. It isn't impossible because rabies is found in the saliva, just very unlikely in this scenario. Just keep an eye on your pet Kate for the next 7 days for any abnormal behavior (i.e. excessive vocalization, irrational behaivor, aggressive behavior, and if she is not up to date on her rabies vaccination, I would highly recommend getting her vaccinated asap. Rabies can only be contracted by being bit by animal that is shedding the virus. The biggest concern for indoor only cats is if a bat has gotten into the house because we do not always know if that bat has bitten a cat. If Bonnie is not vaccinated for Rabies, then she may need to be quarantined for a period of time (usually 10 days) to make sure that she does not develop any signs of Rabies. That quarantine may be able to be in your house if you don't have any other animals or may need to be at a vet clinic or shelter. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian to discuss the specific legal requirements in your area. Cats do get rabies so they need to be vaccinated like dogs. Rabies is a fatal disease to people and animals. That is why we have laws requiring vaccination for cats and dogs. They can get it from raccoons and other mammals. Your photo unfortunately didn’t come through. If you have a stray cat I recommend catching it, in a trap if needed, and bringing it in for an exam, testing for infectious diseases and a rabies vaccination. Many shelters and rescue groups will help pay for this so check what assistance is available in your area. I think the likelihood of you acquiring rabies is relatively low, however it is much higher for Tomas. I'd recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have his rabies vaccine updated and to discuss a quarantine period if needed. Even if Tomas has been exposed to rabies he would not be able to shed the virus for at least a few weeks.

Rabies vaccines are typically administered around 12 weeks old, so Koda is definitely old enough to get one if she is 6 months old. However, mice are not a typical carrier of rabies, so I would not be concerned about this disease. If she ate the mouse, it could possibly cause stomach upset, but since you found it this is unlikely.

You should contact the health department or animal control in your area regarding your bite - they might recommend a quarantine for your cat to be sure there is no concern for rabies. No vaccine is 100% effective so while it is unlikely that the unvaccinated cat could transmit rabies to your cat it is possible. You should also probably contact your physician - cat bites often get infected!

The good news is that rabies is transmitted through bites/saliva and not scratches. If Ming was infected and shedding the rabies virus a month ago, then he would have died from the disease by now.
