My rabbit has dark, solid poop. Is this normal or a vet issue?

Discolored stool can definitely be concerning in rabbits as it may an be a sign of dehydration or intestinal disease. As long as Mistie is eating and drinking normally, urinating regularly, and her stools are well formed, you can keep a close eye on her for any changes. Whatever she ate should pass through her intestinal tract within about two days or so. If you think she is not acting like herself, she should be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Montana. Dark urine can be normal in some rabbits as a result of their diet. Carrots and spinach in particular can discolor the urine. Bunnies have two types of feces, their day feces which are round and firm, and the "night feces" which are softer and elongated/ variable shaped. If you are seeing softer feces this means either that Blackberry has diarrhea or that he is not eating his night feces (which he should). In either case he should see a vet.

Very dark feces is always a quite concerning sign as it could be related to the presence of digested blood coming from the first tract of the gastrointestinal tract. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and possibly further investigations (like abdominal imaging as ultrasound or radiographs) may be needed. He may have some minor GI upset. Discontinue feeding any fruits or vegetables temporarily. Feed only timothy hay or similar grasses. Offer as much as he wants. The high fiber may set his GI tract straight again. If not, have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites. Rabbits will also produce softer stool at night which is normal. You may see them eating this "night stool" as part of their diet.

Hello. What you are seeing are porphyrin pigments in the urine. This is perfectly normal & may come & go. Make sure his pelleted diet is fresh & appropriate for rabbits. Rabbits absolutely need hay & grasses to live well & should be available to Snow all day long. You can feed other green leafy plants such as broccoli, cabbage, chard, parsley, celery leaves, watercress, kale, endive & carrot & beet tops. Hello. I am so sorry for your concerns with Momo. The dark color of the stool does not overly concern me as this can reflect something he has eaten, but with the diarrhea, it may be something inflammatory in his intestines, or even parasites. If he has not been wormed in a while, I would have your veterinarian check his stool just to make sure. If everything is OK, your veterinarian may make some recommendations to address the diarrhea, including the possible use of antibiotics, probiotics or a dietary change.
