My cat has dark poop and diarrhea for two days. Is this normal?

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. They probably got it from the mother. I recommend that you have them evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Sometimes even a simple diet switch from one food to another is enough to cause intestinal inflammation or bacterial imbalance and diarrhea in cats. Though his risk is low, it's also possible he could have an intestinal parasite (cannot be ruled out without a fecal test). You can try adding one tbsp of canned pumpkin to his diet for fiber. If he does not improve soon, it would be best to take him to a vet. Sometimes a short course of medication is necessary to resolve this type of diarrhea.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear that Towan has had diarrhea, but I'm glad to hear that he's acting normal. My first though is usually dietary indiscretion, but you mentioned that he hasn't had any food changes in several weeks. If he doesn't go outside, it's very unlikely that he's picked up any parasites, but it is a possibility that should be ruled out if the color and consistency doesn't go back to normal within the next couple days. Some viral infections can cause stool changes that simply go away on their own, and you may never know what caused it. Another consideration, which is much much more unlikely due to Towan's young age, is a liver problem. Chronic light colored, super smelly poo can be an indicator of an issue with the bile duct. I really don't think that this is the cause as Towan is so young, but I would do you a disservice not to mention it. Personally, I would bring Towan in to the vet for a quick exam and stool check, just to be on the safe side, especially if the stools don't go back to normal in the next day or so, or if any more symptoms develop (vomiting, lethargy, disinterest in food, etc). I would not give him anything over-the-counter as many human drugs are not safe for cats. Good luck, and I hope Towan gets back to normal soon!

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I suggest you have him dewormed and I would also start him on a probiotic (Fortiflora). If you do those two things and the diarrhea doesn't start to resolve in a few days then you need to take him to a vet for an exam. If you use that again in the future and the diarrhea starts again then you can probably confidently say that it is the issue in which case I would stop using it. Usually if that is the case the diarrhea starts within 24 hours of administration. Two weeks later, it is not likely. The new food is also possibly the culprit but again, you didn't switch cold turkey and it doesn't sound like he is eating that much of it anyway. Again, possible but not likely. Hope this helps. This can be normal for a new Mom. Give her a few more days to see if it improves. If it worsens or she not eating and not feeling well then take her in right away. These type of feces are definitively not normal. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. If you are seeing diarrhea, worms, a rash, etc. I would recommend having this looked at by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
