My rabbit chewed a cord and got shocked. What signs should I look for?

It is definitely possible that bunnies could chew through electrical cords. This does pose a risk for electrocution. I have not heard of any fires started as a result of this, but I suppose it is possible. There are protective sleeves you can purchase to go over the cording or you can reroute cords so they are high up or behind furniture so they are not able to access the cords. Another option is a large pen that can be set up so your bunnies have room to roam but not access to things they shouldn't chew! Great job on preparing for your bunny!

It sounds as though Bright is becoming destructive because she is bored. I would recommend penning her into a room where she can be supervised. Cords should be out of reach or protected with plastic piping. I would invest in some rabbit safe toys. Treat balls are fun for them or toys with bells. You can also fill toilet paper tubes with hay to keep Bright preoccupied.

You can check her mouth to see if you see any burns in there, but you would have known right away if she was electrocuted from chewing this cord. I suspect she may be ok, and I would feed her. Hello. Believe me, you would know if Kalli had been shocked by the cord. There would have been some immediate reaction, both physical & vocal. If she is acting perfectly normal, then she was not shocked by the cord. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

That looks like a burn from biting on the electrical cord. The soft tissues in her mouth can take a couple of days to show the wound from the electric shock. Take her to the vet tomorrow for a full exam, they will pay particular attention to her mouth and lungs. There are no home remedies that i recommend for this.

Poor Hazel, I would keep an eye on her. If she is back to her normal self and hopping around fine, eating and passing droppings then I guess the trauma was minor and she has fully recovered. However, if she should show any abnormalities, I would definitely recommend to have her checked over.

Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, blood in her poop, anorexia, or lethargy. If you see any of those signs, then I would take her into the vet. I hope this helps!
