Ferret has candle wax on paws & burnt whiskers. Is a vet needed?

From the pictures, the burn does not appear too bad, so you can likely manage this at home. The biggest worry with burns is the possibility of infection. In order to prevent this, you should clean foot with soap and water everyday. You should also gently scrub the foot to remove dead tissue. It would be best to keep the wound bandaged with silver nitrate cream if possible. However, applying and keeping a bandage on a ferret is extremely difficult. You can try this by applying a bandage similarly to the one demonstrated on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLc-7CdluuE If it's not working, then don't bother and just ensure that the foot is clean. If the foot starts to swell, turn red, black or blue, or has pus oozing from it, then you will need to take Wyatt Erp to the vet for treatment. I hope that helps and he gets better soon.

Poor Fuzzy! I'm glad that you found him! I recommend having him seen by a vet in case the wounds are infected or painful - your vet will be able to prescribe antibiotics and pain medication. In the meantime, you can apply SSD (silver sulfadiazene) ointment several times per day to the areas. You should also use soft, non-scratchy bedding until the wounds heal to prevent further trauma. As the areas heal, Fuzzy may lick them, so you may want to get him an E-collar or cone to prevent further trauma. I hope this helps and that Fuzzy feels better soon!

Burns are generally very painful. When they occur on the feet, sometimes we can make them comfortable with bandaging, but it sounds like Wyatt may need some pain medication. I often find that I need to give my burn patients antibiotoics as well, so I would have your veterinarian examine Wyatt's feet to determine if they are looking infected or painful and decide on medication for him. If he seems okay otherwise and was not burned, I would suggest keeping an eye on him and helping him get the wax off his face. I also recommend not letting him ingest the wax as it may contain chemicals that could be harmful to him.

Ouch! Poor Rocky! Burns are really high risk to get infected and are usually very painful. If possible, I would have your vet look at it so they can properly clean the wound and get him started on antibiotics and pain meds and topical treatment to have the fastest recovery. If you are unable to take him to the vet, you can try to gently clean it will a mild soap and water. I would also make sure he doesn’t lick it. You can put a Cone collar on him to prevent this. You can put neosporin OINTMENT on it twice a day to help it heal. I would also confine him so he doesn’t get the area dirty. This method may not work so watch the wound closely. If at any point there is pus from the wound or he stops eating or becomes lethargic, I would strongly urge him to see a vet as the infection could go systemic without oral antibiotics. The wax from a candle warmer is probably not hot enough to cause serious burns. You can try combing or brushing out the wax, or bathing and using a human hair conditioner to break up the wax. Otherwise, you can let it fall out as Sweetums sheds hair or use hair clippers (NOT SCISSORS) to cut the hair that contains the wax.

Thanks for reaching out about Roo and including photos. Did the veterinarian take an ear swab and look under the microscope for a diagnosis? All ferrets (and cats) need to be treated. If does take some time for animals to respond to the medications, as the Revolution only kills juveniles and adults, not eggs. So need to wait for eggs to hatch, to stop mite cycle. Good luck.
