My dog got a hot wax burn. How should I treat his fur and skin?

This could be a burn but it is hard for me to say without seeing it in person myself. That being said, the absolute best thing to put on this is Silver Sulfadiazine cream (also called SSD cream). This is burn cream they use on humans. You should be able to buy this at any pharmacy - ask the pharmacist. Apply it 2-3 times per day until healed. DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide on this - that will delay healing. If you want to clean it just use a mild soap and warm water. If he is sick or starts to act sick (not eating, lethargic, vomiting, etc) then get him to your vet right away. Burns can cause septicemia (blood infection) which is life threatening. If he is not sick you can proceed as above and hopefully this will heal up nicely. If the burns damaged the hair follicles then his hair may not grow back. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Moonlight is such a handsome dog!! From your pictures I suspect that Moonlight has what is known as a hotspot, or moist dermatitis. You need to take him to your regular vet to have the area looked at to be sure. Your vet will likely want to shave the fur from the area and clean it thoroughly. Some hotspots respond well to topical treatment, others require systemic medications such as antibiotics and steroids. These areas of dermatitis/infection can get larger very very quickly, and can be very irritating and painful. They often are associated with some type of allergy, so your vet may need to discuss allergy testing/treatment/food trials with you as well. This presentation could be due to a localized trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and eventually antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths.Oxide zinc cream (sudocream) can be applied when the skin is completely dry. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. A definite NO on the hydrogen peroxide! 1. It is best to shave the hair around the affected area if at all possible. If you don't have clippers you can use scissors to shorten the hair - just be careful you don't cut him. If you can't shave or trim the hair don't stress too much about it. 2. If he is really itching you can also apply this topical hydrocortisone spray after the wound is dry from the using the pads. Once a day should be enough. HI there! I'm sorry to hear about Marley's troubles. Of course the best thing to do would be to take Marley to his veterinarian to have the wound examined, to make sure it isn't too deep, and doesn't require sutures or anything else, like antibiotics. However, I understand that isn't an option at the moment A great product to use that's over the counter is Veterycin Plus wound spray or gel. Apply this twice per day, and make sure the wound stays covered where Marley cannot lick at it. If he can reach the wound, place a sock or a t shirt on him so that he can't lick all of the wound medication off once it's applied. If you notice a lot of redness, any swelling, discharge of any kind, a foul odor, or the wound is not starting to heal in 3-5 days, then Marley will need to see a veterinarian. Not sure what he actually ate since there are many different waxing products out there. I would advise that if the vomiting doesn't resolve or worsens over the next 6-12 hours, you should take him to a veterinarian and get him evaluated. The ingestion of this product could cause a lot of irritation and a possible foreign body in the stomach or intestinal tract. Your vet can gather a thorough history (more about the product) and examine him. Once that is done, a treatment plan can be outlined. I hope the vomiting stops soon and Sonec returns to normal. From the excellent picture you have provided it looks like Winstyn may have moist dermatitis, or a "hot spot". Unfortunately, hot spots often require a trip to the vet for clipping of the area, cleaning, and prescription of a healing spray / ointment with antibiotics and a steroid. All of these interventions will help the area heal quickly, and minimise the level of discomfort that Winstyn has to experience. Due to the location of the sore it will particularly difficult to treat at home. In the meantime you can help Winstyn by; Placing a an e-collar to prevent him biting or attracting at the sore and making it worse Attempt to air out the area as much as possible to help it dry out. This is key to healing. Do not attempt any medications at home as they can cause pain and in some cases delay healing. I hope this is a helpful answer and that Winstyn feels better soon.
