Is a clean toilet paper roll safe for my chinchilla to chew?

Chinchillas can be entertaining pets but if they are not handled when young they can be flighty/jumpy and difficult to catch, so keep that in mind, in particular with children of younger age (also, some young children may injure a chinchilla by grabbing roughly). Because of this, younger children should always be monitored closely around a small pet like this. Some chinchillas can be potty trained if started at a young age, but usually only for urine, not for bowel movements. Most chinchillas will choose a corner of their cage to use the bathroom and you can place a litterpan in this area along with some soiled litter to encourage use of the litterbox.

Those things should be safe to chew on as long as they are clean. Egg carton should not be treated with any stains or chemicals. T-shirts need to be clean, a concern would be if they chew and ingest. Popsicle sticks should be fine. Newspapers generally use non-toxic inks but can possibly stain fur if gets wet and on the fur. Good luck.

It is not recommended that they live together. They have different environmental and dietary needs. Different species of animals will require different types and amounts of food. Some foods that are safe for one species may be unsafe to another. Rodents who are fed foods that are not formulated for them can develop health problems over time due to too much or too little of certain nutrients. If one animal is dominant over the other, they may not allow the passive animal to eat at all. Toys and supplies that are safe for one type of rodent may pose a hazard to others. The best example of this is dust baths. They can be used for chinchillas and larger rodents but are not considered safe for hamsters/mice/rats because the dust can cause respiratory problems. Pine cones are not safe for chinchillas. The sap or resins within may cause illness. Safe woods include untreated and dried pine, bamboo, elm and willow. He may be chewing out of curiosity. Continue to provide safe chew toys an d items for Bobby to use. Correct him immediately when he chews inappropriately.

I recommend to stick with toys meant for rodents. It's hard to know if toxicity is a potential concern but the small threads could become wrapped around his teeth. Many mice like to chew on cardboard boxes and toilet paper rolls. They also make wooden toys for rodents. The clear exercise balls and a running wheel will also be fun for Frankie. It is best to give them things to chew on that are made for guinea pigs but if you are going to use boxes it is best for them to be plain with no writing/ink. Here are some good treats for them. They can chew on cardboard as long as they don't ingested large quantities. Offer rabbit safe wooden chew toys as well. Their teeth are constantly growing, so they need to chew to keep them at an appropriate length.
