Bunny has red skin, fur loss on neck after flea drops. Is he okay?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see the areas you described, they appear somewhat red and crusty with hair loss. This can be caused by overgrooming (can be from lack of enrichment), a skin infection (bacterial or fungal), and certain skin mites. I recommend gently clipping the fur with an electric clipper to keep it clean and improve your ability to monitor it. You can also apply some silver sulfadiazene (SSD) ointment to the area. If there is no improvement over several days, then your bunny should be seen by a vet to determine the cause. I would also separate her from any other rabbits she may be housed with as fungal infections and skin mites are contagious. I hope this helps!

First, the ectoparasites around the eyes appear to be stick-tight fleas and a once-a-,month topical medication called Revolution should work well. Your veterinarian should be able to prescribe even in lock down. Second, the lesion on the ear/face area needs to be shaved, gently cleaned with a warm wet washcloth and a mild soap. If continues to be crusty, a veterinarian is needed to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Check inside of the ear for crusts, this could be ear mites and the cause of the facial mass. Revolution should treat this well also. Lastly, rabbits need to be spayed as they have a very high incidence of uterine cancer. Good luck.

It could be infection or inflammation. Clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, water bottle and hides. Replace the bedding and clean daily to keep the cage as dry as possible. If Sosow is licking or chewing at his leg, you will need to place a small e-collar (cone) on him and have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits to diagnose and treat infection or inflammation.

Hello there! A red, irritated skin lesion is probably not an emergency unless Fluffy is lethargic or otherwise acting ill. I do recommend that he visits a vet to have it evaluated, as it may be a skin infection. This is a common location for dermatitis (skin inflammation and infection) as it is a warm fold that, if it encounters moisture, can be a breeding ground for microorganisms. The vet may take a small sample of skin cells to look at under the microscope, which will help determine how to treat his skin. In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry. Thanks for reaching out about Lola and including a photo. This does appear to be sore hocks. Do not use Neosporin as if ingested can seriously affect the normal gastrointestinal flora. If is tender, try pure aloe vera. Good anti-effective and anti-inflammatory effects and okay if ingested. If seems painful, a veterinary visit is recommended. If you're unsure of the type of parasite causing issues for Theodore, it is best to seek veterinary care to have any of the mites/bites examined and parasite type found. There are safe topical flea medications available for rabbits through your vet such as advantage and revolution that can help prevent fleas and mites, and your vet can also use a special type of lamp to check the area for ringworm. If you do see fleas, you can use a fine-toothed comb and a gentle bath with Dawn dish soap to kill/suffocate fleas and safely remove them without chemicals.
