Why is my bunny's neck skin red and irritated? Is it an emergency?

It could be infection or inflammation. Clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, water bottle and hides. Replace the bedding and clean daily to keep the cage as dry as possible. If Sosow is licking or chewing at his leg, you will need to place a small e-collar (cone) on him and have him examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits to diagnose and treat infection or inflammation.

This can be caused by overgrooming (can be from lack of enrichment), a skin infection (bacterial or fungal), and certain skin mites. I recommend gently clipping the fur with an electric clipper to keep it clean and improve your ability to monitor it. You can also apply some silver sulfadiazene (SSD) ointment to the area. If there is no improvement over several days, then your bunny should be seen by a vet to determine the cause. I would also separate her from any other rabbits she may be housed with as fungal infections and skin mites are contagious. I hope this helps!

Thanks for reaching out about Bun Bun. Would describe it as flakey skin or loose? Loose lends one to believe the skin is sloughing. Flakey skin could be due to parasites, an infection, skin inflammation (multiple causes). Another concern might be myxomatosis, which is usually transmitted via a mosquito bite.. What a cute bunny! From the photo the area on the skin looks as though it has healed- if there is a defect in the skin itself then an exam by the vet is recommended as he may need antibiotics. I cannot see any redness to his eyes in this photo, so I am not sure if you mean that his eye color is red or if he has red eye lids or the white of his eyes look red. If he is rubbing at his eyes/blinking alot, has excess tears or a green or yellow discharge from the eyes these would be cause for a vet exam as well. If he is not acting lethargic and is eating/drinking I would monitor the urine for a few days- if he becomes lethargic/is straining to pee/stops eating or drinking or the urine continues to look red then an exam is recommended.

Your rabbit likely has a mite infection. Stop the tea tree oil (it causes more problems) and you need to get him to a vet for an injection against mites. If you cannot go to a veterinarian , try to contact your local rabbit society, They may be able to help you.

Hi there, I'm unfamiliar with this product use in rabbits. In the future, I would recommend using Revolution from a veterinarian, as the active ingredient selamectin has been well studied for its safety in rabbit species. I think everything else about your plan sounds great though. You can add bedding and blankets to help with sore hocks, as well as making sure he is a lean body condition (not overweight). If the wound will not heal or grows larger, then she should be physically examined by your veterinarian. A fungal culture would be needed to diagnose ringworm infection. If you see her licking or chewing, use an e-collar. Keep her nails trimmed to prevent trauma from excessive scratching. You can clean the area with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution daily. Dry thoroughly afterwards.
