My rabbit has eye ticks and a head wound. How to help without a vet?

Tick-borne diseases are not very prevalent in rabbits. While I wouldn't write it off as meaningless, I would not necessarily lose any sleep over this finding. If you would like, you can treat rabbits with feline Revolution, though this does not offer protection against all tick species. Otherwise, you should just monitor the area from where the tick was removed for any superficial changes. If you start to see any changes in behavior, appetite, or bathroom habits, I would take Zara in to be examined by your veterinarian. Hope this helps.

Oh gosh! I am so sorry to hear this! Rabbits should not be given any over the counter pain medication- it can be fatal to them. Do you have hair or beard clippers? #40 blade is best but a 10 will do the job. Put her in a dim room but enough light for you to see what you are doing. Clip/shave all the hair around the wounds. Use warm water to compress and clean the wounds. If you have the opportunity to have her evaluated by a veterinarian that would be ideal. Sometimes equine veterinarians will help with the rabbits too . Getting the fur off can really help decrease the chance of infection as well as allows you to see what is going on and if it is improving or getting worse. Even though a picture of the wound itself would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). An immediate check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Hi there, I'm unfamiliar with this product use in rabbits. In the future, I would recommend using Revolution from a veterinarian, as the active ingredient selamectin has been well studied for its safety in rabbit species. I think everything else about your plan sounds great though. You can add bedding and blankets to help with sore hocks, as well as making sure he is a lean body condition (not overweight). If you're unsure of the type of parasite causing issues for Theodore, it is best to seek veterinary care to have any of the mites/bites examined and parasite type found. There are safe topical flea medications available for rabbits through your vet such as advantage and revolution that can help prevent fleas and mites, and your vet can also use a special type of lamp to check the area for ringworm. If you do see fleas, you can use a fine-toothed comb and a gentle bath with Dawn dish soap to kill/suffocate fleas and safely remove them without chemicals.
