My rabbit has black bugs and dandruff on neck and ears. What to do?

Thanks for reaching out about Stuart Little and including photos. A few things. First, the ectoparasites around the eyes appear to be stick-tight fleas and a once-a-,month topical medication called Revolution should work well. Your veterinarian should be able to prescribe even in lock down. Second, the lesion on the ear/face area needs to be shaved, gently cleaned with a warm wet washcloth and a mild soap. If continues to be crusty, a veterinarian is needed to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Check inside of the ear for crusts, this could be ear mites and the cause of the facial mass. Revolution should treat this well also. Lastly, rabbits need to be spayed as they have a very high incidence of uterine cancer. Good luck.

That certainly looks like seborrhea to me. The most common cause of this type of symptom in rabbits is called a fur mite (cheyletiella). To treat or prevent these types of mites, the use of Revolution (a preventative marketed for dogs and cats) should be used. In order to determine if this is the cause definitively, a skin scraping would be needed. Sometimes, diagnosing these can be tricky even when you know exactly what you are looking for, so often it is better to just try and treat to see if there is any improvement.

Cheyletiela mites are often difficult to see with the naked eye, they can be treated either with ivermectin spot ons or Revolution spot ons, both are prescription medications that you will need to get from your vet.

Rabbits can be treated for mites with ivermectin or revolution. I would however recommend taking Olaf to another vet to get the proper dosing. You do need to clean the cage every day for a least 1-2 weeks to help prevent re contamination from the mites. I hope that helps

The best flea / mite treatment and preventative in my opinion for rabbits Revolution, which is a prescription product marketed for cats and dogs. Typically, in a small Lionhead rabbit, you should use the smallest size of Revolution available, which is designed for kittens under 5 lbs. Hope this helps.

Hi there, I'm unfamiliar with this product use in rabbits. In the future, I would recommend using Revolution from a veterinarian, as the active ingredient selamectin has been well studied for its safety in rabbit species. I think everything else about your plan sounds great though. You can add bedding and blankets to help with sore hocks, as well as making sure he is a lean body condition (not overweight). Patchy fur loss with flaking along the rabbit's back is typical for the mite Cheyletiella parasitovorax, Your veterinarian may examine a sticky tape preparation or skin scraping under the microscope for the presence of mites, however, might sometimes not find any, even though they are present on the rabbit. Mites are usually eradicated easily. Classic treatment is with injectable or oral ivermectin, or a selamectin spot on given in treatments two weeks apart. As mites live in the environment of your rabbit, it is essential to thoroughly clean your rabbit's cage and disinfect areas after each treatment to control reinfestation, since fur and dander in the environment may contain mite eggs. You will need to treat all rabits in your household.
