My chameleon's lip turned black after abscess. Is it mouth rot?

This could be due to a trauma and or a bacterial or fungal infection. Swab the infected area of the shell with a diluted povidone-iodine solution twice daily. Scrape away the infected area gently with a blunt tool or a cotton pad. If this time of first line treatment does not help and you do not see any improvement in 48hours a check up at your local veterinarian would be required as antibiotic ointment and more aggressive treatment may be needed. A minor wound such as scratch could of being the original trauma, Terra's immune system moved melanin to the area as a way to fight an infection. From the pictures it appears to be an infection. This infection could be bacterial or fungal. It is possible she had trauma to hip lip that started it. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian because she will need medications to clear it up.

From the picture it looks more like inflamed and ulcerated tissue then extra shed, but pictures can be deceiving. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon, before he becomes too sick. He will likely need antibiotics. Also double check that your temperature and humidity are appropriate, and that he is getting good night and daylight cycles (too long light cycles can cause stress).
