It would be easier to keep and secure than a laundry hamper. Given the temps required for geckos, plastic may not be the best option either. You will need a a heat lamp for day use and maybe a heat source if nighttime temperatures drop below 70 F. You can use slate, reptile carpet, plain paper towels or a coconut fiber substrate. It is possible he was handled frequently before you got him, so he is already used to being handled. He may also just have a personality where he isn't afraid of being picked up. As a reminder, geckos can carry infections that can make humans sick, so always wash your hands well after handling him! I hope this is helpful.

Leopard geckos are great "starter" reptiles. They don't require special lighting (UVB) like other reptiles. A 20 gallon tank is big enough for one. Add a heat source, hides and a water bowl and you are good to go. It is very unlikely that the store will take the gecko back, as they will not know whether it has any health problems. If you cannot keep it, you should ask your local shelter to take it , or contact a reptile club in your area. Maybe someone will take the Gecko off your hands.
