My Westie's coat isn't full. When will it be fully developed?

It's normal for puppies this age to have a thinner coat than an adult dog - most German shepherds do not have a thick, full adult coat until 2 years of age or older. If there are any bald patches where she has lost hair, or if she is itching excessively, these can be signs of a skin condition such as allergies or mange - in that case, I would recommend having Roxy examined by a vet. He/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

Puppies are born with a soft hair coat known as their "puppy coat". I have seen this fall out as early as 3 months of age and is replaced by adult fur. She is just too young at the moment but with time if fed a proper complete puppy diet, it will happen as she continues to grow. Not all pup's hair growth is the same which is probably why her coat is not as long as her siblings. If at any point, she develops any itchiness then have her evaluated by your veterinarian to ensure there is not any underlying skin condition. Good luck!

Hi there. I see that Mollie is just a puppy, only about 4 months old :) It takes 2-3 years for coated breeds like Eskimo Spitz's to develop their full adult coat - puppies and "teenagers" will look thin and not as puffy in comparison.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes I would be concerned. She may have microscopic mites (demodex) that need to be addressed. A vet will need to see her and scrape her skin to look at the mites under the microscope. If found, they can start Buzy on treatments and eventually the hair should grow back. If it isn’t mites the vet may need to do more tests to determine why she isn’t growing hair. Once a diagnosis is made the correct treatment should fix her problem. Good luck and kisses to Buzy!

If it is not associated with itchiness or discomfort, there is no need to be concerned about this. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! yes dogs can shed or blow their undercoat in the summer. It is hard to predict what Austins adult coat with be. I agree it's a bit wiry. If he is pure bred gold and not a doodle mix I see no reason why his coat won't look like his parents. I think is just a bit underweight. I would increase his puppy food by 25%. Be sure he has been dewormed well and is on a high quality commercial puppy food. Diet and intestinal parasites can affect the coat as well as body weight.
