Will my Shih Tzu puppy's matted cottony undercoat grow out?

She is young and does not have her full adult coat in yet. make sure she is on a good quality puppy food. You can brush her regularly as this can help. Give her more time as her puppy coat will start to change into her adult coat and the texture and length can still change.

She is just too young at the moment but with time if fed a proper complete puppy diet, it will happen as she continues to grow. Not all pup's hair growth is the same which is probably why her coat is not as long as her siblings. If at any point, she develops any itchiness then have her evaluated by your veterinarian to ensure there is not any underlying skin condition. Good luck!

It is possible that Tank is loosing some of his puppy coat now that he is 1 year old. Also I would make sure he does not have any signs of fleas or parasites that might cause an abnormal coat/ pet to lose hair. I would recommend an aloe and oatmeal shampoo. If that does not help I would recommend taking Tank to a vet to make sure nothing more is going on which might affect the coat growth. Hope that helps

Hello. You have picked out such a cute puppy. The way his coat lays now, I would be quite certain that he should have the softer coat, possibly with a little curl or wave to it. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I can’t tell for sure without looking and feeling but it is likely that it is perfectly normal. Austin is simply loosing his “puppy coat” and growing in his new adult fur. The adult coat of Goldens is quite soft and shiny when properly cared for but it will never be quite as soft as his newborn fur. Of course if it stays very thin or there are large patches missing, talk to your vet about what else could be going on (mites, hormonal problem, post shave alopecia, or other problems.) Thank you for submitting your question regarding Puffy. I do not believe that her hair coat indicates any disease process. Rather it is likely result of her genetics. What breed was her father? My guess is that her appearance is closure related to him than the other pups. I hope this information helps!
