My dog's front nail split. Can I treat a split dog nail at home?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

MY dogs front nail split right in the middle. We thought it was a nail growing under another nail. But it definitely split in half. Is there any way we can treat it at home without taking him to the vet ?

Honestly, the vet would pull off that top piece of nail (the white part) with a hemostat instrument. This is very painful and the nail may bleed a lot after that. So, if that part of the nail is very loose you may be able to pull it off - be aware that he may try to bite. It is very painful.... If it bleeds you can put some corn starch or flour on it and then bandage it. You can look at some YouTube videos on how to properly bandage the foot. Keep it bandaged for few days. If he is trying to eat the bandage or lick the nail you will need to get an E-collar (cone) to put on him until it's healed. It won't heal if he keeps licking it.

Of course if he is limping, not eating, the nail won't stop bleeding, etc you will need to get Thor to the vet sooner.

That's a bad split. That will need to be removed, but do not do it at home. That will have to be done with the vet under sedation as it will be very painful. Get Baxter into a vet this weekend if he's limping or it appears infected. Otherwise, you can wait until Monday to have him seen. Wrap it in a bandage to keep it protected until he sees the vet, and do not allow him to lick the area. Do not put any more hydrogen peroxide on it. I hope this helps.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would recommend soaking the foot in a betadine and saline mixture. I typically recommend mixing the two until you have a light brown solution. Then use this to dip the foot into to help clean off any infection. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine this more closely as the nail likely needs to be cut off and Tyson placed on a course of an oral antibiotic. If it's not bleeding it may not have injured the quick but I can't tell from the photo. The broken part of the nail needs to be removed and of the break is behind the quick, Loki needs to be sedated and clip behind the break (which is painful so they get sedated). Since it is not actively bleeding you can trim the nail yourself. It doesn't look that bad but you need to cut off the top part that is "hanging" or it will catch on things and could potentially cause more damage and pain to her. When you trim it, it may bleed so if you are not prepared for that at home then you should have your vet do it. A groomer may not be comfortable doing this but you can ask them. My dog has a torn nail, what can I do for it until I see the vet?

It definitely appears to be torn at the fleshy part of the nail. These can sometimes be easily removed. You can try this at home if you are comfortable, but should be prepared for a lot of bleeding. Before you attempt that, I recommend you read the article at the link below. Hello, thank you for your question about Kimi. Other than allowing the nail to grow/fall off on its own the only other option would be to cut the nail short below the split. Having the split portion of the nail removed will prevent it from getting caught and causing pain or problems in the future. However, cutting the nail below the split will likely mean encountering the blood vessel present in the nasal and mean that Kimi may have to wear a bandage on his foot for a little bit. If you would like to have the split nail cut I would recommend bringing Kimi to your veterinarian so that they can cut it, stop the bleeding, and place a bandage on his foot. Alternatively, you could continue monitoring the nail for catching on the ground or any discomfort. Hope this helps, good luck!

This rarely get infected if disinfected properly, but a check up would be ideal just to cut off the remaining part of the nail. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (at least twice daily for the next 3-4 days. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. Poor baby. I would definitely go to the vet for that one. The groomer could pull it off, but there could be a lot of pain and bleeding. At the vet they can sedate him if needed, as well as send him home with a few days of pain medications or even antibiotics if he's been licking at it a lot.

My dog has a torn nail. How can I treat it at home without a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This appears to be a simple torn nail. Even though this looks really scary, it’s not usually a big deal. Gently clean the area with diluted iodine or plain warm water. If you have nail clippers, clip that nail as short as you feel comfortable doing. If the nail is dangling, sometimes it will come right off, leaving that red inner hub. If there is bleeding, just apply pressure with a clean cloth until it stops. If Izzy is licking it, put her in an E-collar 24 hours a day for about 3 days. And that’s it. As long as you keep it clean, most simple torn nails will grow in on their own within a month. If anything looks odd, it’s not healing, it’s smelly, or anything concerns you, it’s time to see the vet. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Izzy!
