I just got a new puppy. How can I tell if it's a boy or girl?

Cute picture! Wonder if thats a boy or girl.... ;) There's no hard and fast rules about temperament when it comes to gender in dogs. An intact female and an intact male will both be more likely to show aggression than one who has been neutered or spayed, so regardless of which you choose, please have him/her neutered/spayed. You can find all kinds of things online that say that females are easier to train, or that males tend to be more loyal or attached to you... after practicing veterinary medicine for 14 years --interacting with literally thousands of dogs and their people --and having a number of dogs of my own, both male and female, I can just reiterate what I said initially--there is no hard and fast rule. I don't even really think its fair to make generalizations because I just don't think they hold true often enough. Male dogs are more likely to mark. Once they are neutered this is less of an issue but they will still seem to carry a "reserve" for each tree along your walking route. From a health standpoint, theres not a huge difference either (especially if spayed or neutered)-- one isn't inherently "healthier" than the other. The biggest thing is to meet the dog individually and see what you're looking for in a personality rather than automatically ruling out one or the other based on whether they are girl or boy. I can't see based on the photos. I need to see lower down below the opening to the urethra. Sometimes though this is still difficult as the male guinea pigs can pull the testicles into the abdomen. Try holding Buddy up and taking another photo. You can likely also bring him into a pet store or a vet's office and they will likely be able to tell. I hope this helps and best of luck!

Dogs can have their sex determined easily as males have a penis that lies along the mid-line of their stomach and girls have nothing in the area. If you roll him on his back, and see a lumpy structure down the middle of his stomach near his back legs, that is a penis. If this is completely smooth then he is a girl. Testicles can take time to decend, up to 6 months, so if they aren't down yet (and at this age would be very small) then this isn't a concern. I recommend just waiting. Puppies will sit in many different ways that can look funny, so it is likely just a puppy thing. If he is walking, running, and playing normally then I would just monitor him for now, and have the vet check it out in 4 weeks when you get his next set of vaccines. Based on this picture it doesn't look right, it looks like it is divided in two but it could be that the picture taken is misleading, i would recommend taking a couple more pictures from different angles so i can determine for sure if there is a problem or not.
