My 8-week-old puppy sits funny. Are his testicles normal?

We just got a puppy. He is 8 weeks old border collie and golden retriever cross. I am unsure about whether his genitals are normal. I don't know whether he has testicles or not. However the previous vet has marked him down as male. Please let me kniw if i should be concerned. He sits slightly funny at the moment. Ahilan

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dogs can have their sex determined easily as males have a penis that lies along the mid-line of their stomach and girls have nothing in the area. If you roll him on his back, and see a lumpy structure down the middle of his stomach near his back legs, that is a penis. If this is completely smooth then he is a girl. Testicles can take time to decend, up to 6 months, so if they aren't down yet (and at this age would be very small) then this isn't a concern. I recommend just waiting. Puppies will sit in many different ways that can look funny, so it is likely just a puppy thing. If he is walking, running, and playing normally then I would just monitor him for now, and have the vet check it out in 4 weeks when you get his next set of vaccines. Hello. It is too early to make any judgments as to if & when Diesel's testicles may drop. You certainly can wait until he is 6 months to a year of age, but if nothing is seen or felt by this time, he probably never will drop them. He should also be neutered in this case because the retained testicles are maintained at a much higher temperature in the body, & this can result in the testicular tissue turning cancerous. Why haven't my 6-month-old dog's testicles dropped? Penis always out?

The anatomy appears incorrectly developed. Your pet may be a hermaphrodite. What you see there may actually be female genitalia that has inappropriately developed. In order to truly diagnose what is going on your pet should see a specialist. Abdominal ultrasound can be used to assess for undescended testicles. How can I tell if my puppy's undescended testicle has dropped?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! You should be able to feel the testicles. If you only feel one then the other testicle is still not descended. They should be both down by birth or by 4 months. It just means the vet will have to search for the retained testicle when he gets neutered. He should be neutered because it is a congenital or genetic disease and the testicle can become cancerous over time. I hope this helps!

My young male dog's testicles are very loose. Is this normal?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The saggy nature of Leo's scrotum and testicles is just cosmetic and there is not medical worry. It is likely hereditary in nature. If you plan to neuter him the Vet can also fix the scrotum (scrotal ablation). Other wise there is nothing to do about it now. He does seem quite well endowed. If the testicles suddenly seem more enlarged then I would have him seen as he could have an infection, suffered trauma or if painful a torsion. I wish you the best

My 5-month-old puppy's testicle hasn't dropped. Will it still drop?

Oso is very cute! By six months of age, both testicles should be descended into the scrotum. If they are not by six months of age, then it is unlikely that the other testicle will fall into place. This testicle has the potential to turn into a specific type of tumor and so you will want to make sure to have him neutered. Hopefully it will come down on its own!
