My puppy's anal area looks off. Is this normal or a health concern?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I unfortunately cannot tell much about how the anus is functioning by looking at a photo. Testing has to be done in person by a vet to see if the sphincter is responding. I do not see a prolapse in this photo. I agree the anal opening looks flaccid but that is all I can say. I strongly recommend you take him to a vet for an exam especially if you think he is straining. At 2 months old he is ready for his first vaccinations anyway and if he has not been dewormed already that needs to be done as well.

It looks pretty normal but the coloration is difficult to assess in the photos. I would just monitor the area and if it seems like he is having diarrhea, scooting his butt on the ground, etc then I suggest you have him checked by your vet.

From what I can see in the photo, it's hard to tell what this is. It could be a mass or tumor of some kind, or possibly something like an infected anal gland or even a perineal hernia. It doesn't look normal, so I would recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked in person. Your veterinarian can palpate the area to get a better idea of what's going on, and may recommend a biopsy or other testing if needed.

Its a little hard to tell by the photo. It may be that this is a normal pigmentation (a 'freckle' of sorts), or it could be a cancerous mass, though it seems unlikely due to Rover being relatively young (it says he's 3 years old). This sounds gross and obvious, so I apologize, but i cannot totally rule out in the photo that it isn't just a little bit of poop stuck to skin-- I realize you probably have already ruled this out, but if not, gently clean the area with a damp cloth. It is reasonable to keep an eye on it at home; measure how big it is, and make a point to measure it monthly. Please have this puppy seen by a veterinarian. This looks like a congenital abnormality or an ulcerative lesion. You need to make sure this puppy is able to urinate and defecate normally and is not in pain.

That looks like she has an anal prolapse, which is when the anus is displaced outside the body. It will need to be put back into place and the best person to do this is the vet. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I know you say Boosie's shape shows best in this photo but it is not easy to evaluate him from it due to the angle. Without feeling him myself and just seeing him standing/walking normally it is difficult to say. I does look to me like his stifle (knee) area is thick in this photo but it could just be the way he is laying.... I do think you should take him in for a veterinary exam. If nothing else, he should be due for his 2nd round of vaccines anyway so this is a good time to do the exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes!
