How to stop my big dog from jumping when I come home or play?

I would recommend a couple of things to help break this habit. First, when you walk in the house, completely ignore Chevy, turn your back to him, don’t look at him in the eye or even correct his behavior, because although it is negative attention, he still wants any type of attention he can get from you. I would also recommend getting a harness that has pressure points over the shoulders as these help prevent jumping up. Any time he jumps up on you lift your leg in the air so that his chest hits your knee. This will be uncomfortable for him and will discourage him from jumping. You should also start working with him on basic commands such as sit/stay/come. Once he has mastered these it should be easier to use commands when he is excitable. I hope this helps. The best advice I can give is exercise, training, and more exercise. When you walk in the door, ask Sofia to come to a certain spot, sit (or some other trick), and then reward her with a treat. If you do this every time, she will quickly learn to go to that spot every time you walk in (rather than jump and nip at you). And then take her out to run at least once daily- three times is even better. Best of luck to you and Sofia.

This is quite a normal behavior - she wants to be involved once you come home. Altering your routine to take her for a short walk immediately when you come home or giving her a food treat or chew toy to play with in the garden as soon as you arrive home may help to redirect her attention, you will have to continue with such routines as she will expect the new routine instead! Ignoring or correcting the behavior is also possible and would require a lot of time and patience and should be undertaken with advice from a behaviorist so as not to create fear or anxiety if you try to over correct the behavior by punishment

I would recommend investing in a crate that she can stand up, sit down and turn around and nothing else. I would not put wee wee pads in there and no blankets or toys. If she does not go to the bathroom outside I would put her in the crate when you get home and then 20 minutes later try again. It seems like you need to be very strict about the defecating. Regarding the jumping on people I would recommend having a trainer come to your home to work with you and her to make it so you are able to have people at your home. Many dogs get very excited when visitors come to the door! I would recommend asking guests to call ahead for now when they are coming over, so that you can put Vesta on a leash before they arrive. Use the leash to keep her under control, and use treats to reward her for sitting or other calm behavior. Once she calms down a bit, your visitors can also ask her to sit for treats and petting. It takes lots of time and patience to work on this issue, so be patient with Vesta while she learns! Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! You should start with one on one training and NO walks until he is trained. Hire a trainer. Use positive reinforcement and train him to "sit, "heal" on a leash, "look," and "leave it." Also get him used to the gentle leader harness that goes on the muzzle, this allows for amazing head control. Once he is used to the harness and is able to listen to you at home, practice outside on a leash. When people approach ask him to "look" at you and sit. When he does this and ignores the person passing by he gets a treat and verbal praise. You can do this with people you know first.
