How to calm a young dog that jumps and nips when overly excited?

This is a typical behavior in puppies, especially boxer puppies from what I have seen in my experience. With cases like these, I recommend keeping a collar with a leash attached to him at all times so that you can pick up the leash and correct this behavior right away. If he starts to jump up you then grab the leash and give a firm tug downward and in a stern voice say "off!". If this does not work alone, you can also incorporate a spray bottle filled with water and also lightly spritz him in the face with the water bottle while at the same time tugging on his leash in a downward direction and say "off!". You need to let him know that you are in control of him at all times and by establishing this, he should listen more. I would also reward him with treats when he listens to you so that you can reinforce the good behavior. I hope this helps! Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! German Shepherds are highly intelligent an highly trainable dogs. I recommend hiring a trainer and nipping this in the bud now. German Shepherds are also very large and can be aggressive to strangers as adults so being able to control Bentley is very important. I would start with sit, stay, and leave it. Purchase the gentle leader harness that goes on the muzzle. Use that for all walks. Bring treats on the walk and when he tries to jump have him sit. Once he sits he gets a treat. Jumping is unacceptable in a dog his size and is one of the hardest bad habits to break. He should not be allowed to jump on people. The gentle leader allows great control of the head. In terms of Bruin's greeting when you walk in the door, the best way to prevent her from nipping at your hands or ankles would be to only acknowledge her on your terms. While everyone is happy and excited to see their dog when they get home, in cases such as these where there is a behavior problem, sometimes our interactions with our pets must be altered. When you walk in the house for the next few days, I would ask that you consider not playing into her excitement. Instead, do not pet her or give her attention until she has calmed and settled down. Once settled, you should reward her with love and attention. If she still nibbles or bites, cease giving attention and walk away. Alternatively, you can have a toy in another hand and give her the toy to play with. If she takes it, reward her profusely with praise and/or treats. Since she is a Border Collie, she will likely pick up on things quite quickly. Training her to not become excited and/or nervous around guests will be a more difficult task. At least for the near future, I would recommend keeping her on leash when guests first enter the house and for the first several minutes they are present. Once off leash, instruct your guests not to acknowledge her if she is overly pushy or nibbling. If she settles down, your guest should reward her similarly as you were. It is all about repetition and consistency with behavior. I hope you and Bruin figure things out.

This behavior tends to subside or drastically lessen over time as a puppy ages. For the biting, I find that whenever a puppy bites my hand, I place my thumb under the tongue and hold it there until the puppy is annoyed and then release. I repeat this over and over until the puppy loses interest in biting. You can also use a spray bottle filled with water and every time Lucky jumps up or begins biting, you can lightly spritz him in the face and say "off!" to help deter the unwanted behavior. This is a very common issue with puppies - they often get overly excited during play, and have trouble controlling themselves :) It's possible that your sister may tend to be louder, more active, or move more suddenly when she plays with the puppy, which often results in the puppy getting more "wound up." If your sister doesn't live with you, this may also be happening because the puppy is excited to see her when she comes over. Make sure that you have lots of different toys available for Sherri - long floppy rope or fleece toys for tugging, plush toys for biting and carrying, and smaller toys or balls for chasing and fetching. Your sister should always use a toy when she is playing with Sherri, so that Sherri has something to bite on. If she starts to get too excited, you can ask her to sit for a treat, or engage her in some other activity that is calmer and less exciting until she settles down. If needed, you can even give her something to chew on, such as a bully stick or a Kong stuffed with peanut butter, and put her in her crate for a while to let her calm down. Her ability to stay calm during play should improve as she gets older, just as it does for human children :) In the meantime, you can help her by redirecting her to a calmer activity when needed.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would assume she is doing this to get his attention to play. Bella is young and needs a lot of exercise and interaction. I would add more walks or play time. Consider enrolling her in doggie daycare a few times per week. Otherwise I would have a leash on her at all times and when she starts this behavior, pull her down, make her sit and remove her from the situation. Consider 5-10 mins in "time out" in another room or crate. Then exercise her. I hope this helps!
