How to stop my dog from barking loudly for early morning treats?

Hi and thank you for posting your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Right now, it seems like he barks and coming downstairs may actually be rewarding the barking behavior. He has learned that barking will bring you downstairs. To combat this behavior, you may want to try the following: When your dog begins to bark in the morning, do not walk downstairs until he is quiet. This may take some patience. Once you are downstairs, reward with praise and a treat he really really likes. Do this several days in a row and he will learn to be quiet in the morning and that barking does not lead to you coming downstairs. Patience is key. Continue to reinforce the "No bark" command. Try to determine the cause for barking (boredom, hunger, stress, anxiety,etc) and decrease or eliminate the stimuli. I would highly recommend you consider contacting a local dog trainer who can work with you in person as that is needed. This should work but it will take time and persistence and of course a professional working with you both. Best of luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While it may seem too simple, the best way to resolve this issue is by ignoring her when she tries to play at those times. Eventually she will learn that it is not ok to do that and will stop waking up at that time to do it. Keep in mind though that she is a puppy and is behaving like a puppy would be expected to. It is important to introduce new things in your dog's environment slowly and provide plenty of positive reinforcement during the process in the form of praise and treats. These types of behavior can improve though this does require in person training with the help of a qualified dog trainer. I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and your pups in person to really take care of this behavior. Well down on teaching Max to "speak"! You are half way there to now teaching him how to be "quiet" Begin by working with the “speak” command. Say speak, then wait for your dog to bark a few times in succession. If you dog seems confused, put him or her in a situation where your dog will most likely bark, and then use the word “speak” during the action. Offer a treat to stop the barking and don’t give it to your dog unless the barking has stopped completely. Offer praise and rewards readily. Once you have established and mastered this command, begin to work on the “quiet” command. When your dog starts barking wait patiently until he or she finishes, then calmly use the word “quiet”. Then offer praise and a reward. Once your dog is effectively following the verbal commands with treats you can start using the commands without a treat every single time.
