My dogs bark at my scooter. How to stop their fear of new things?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are medications that can be used to reduce anxiety at times. These types of behavior can improve though this does require in person training with the help of a qualified dog trainer. I would encourage you to contact a dog trainer that can work with you and your pups in person to really take care of this behavior. The sooner these behaviors are dealt with, the more likely it is that you can improve and resolve them. Good luck and have a great day!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like you have been doing some one on one training and small groups, and that has been going well. If that is the case, I suppose I would try adding one dog at a time, and not moving to more dogs until the behavior is controlled. If 2 or 3 is going well, then add a 4th, and change who that 4th dog is. Perhaps you will find that there is one particular dog that is the instigator, and you can work more one on one with that dog. Make sure you are telling them what TO do (i.e. sit, lay down, stay, etc.) instead of what NOT to do. Give them a job, and reward them for doing that job. Have patience, and keep working at it! When it comes to dog behavior modification it is all about positive reinforcement and most importantly a lot of patience, persistent and cosistency. I would encourage you to start giving the treats at a later time so that she can bark and not affect your neighbors. Now, what you are going to do is that you let her go until she stops to your command for her to calm down. When she finally does you praise her and give her the treat. Sooner or later she will associate staying quiet with something positive. It just takes some time. Once she learns then you may be able to go back to the morning routine. I would highly recommend you consider contacting a local dog trainer who can work with you in person as that is needed. This should work but it will take time and persistence and of course a professional working with you both. Best of luck!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear that Charlie is barking so much at the construction. Since it is such a new, loud noise, he is not used to hearing it yet. My best advice is for you to ignore the noise - the less you react to the noise, Charlie will realize that it is not a big deal. It may take 2-3 days for him to adjust. If after this time, he is still barking incessantly, I recommend asking your veterinarian about a calming medication he/she could prescribe for the short term. A good example is Trazodone. I hope this is helpful!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your description, I would recommend establishing a method of training Sassy not to bark. I would recommend using a spray bottle filled with water and lightly spritz Sassy in the face when she begins barking at BoBo while at the same time saying "no bark!" and see if this helps. You can also use an empty can filled with coins and throw it in Sassy's direction while saying the same thing in hopes that this will stop the behavior. I hope this helps!
