My vet said to stop my dog's antibiotics early, is that safe to do?

Hello. So sorry Niko Denali is having this issue. I would not call Diagel a probiotic but it is a natural product to treat diarrhea. You can certainly use probiotics along with what he is taking if you want to do that but you need to use a product made for dogs. The best probiotic in my opinion is Fortiflora. I would use that one if you can get it. Sometimes you can find it at Petsmart or Petco and even sometimes Walmart has it. If not you can buy it online at Amazon. You do not need a prescription for it. DO NOT use yogurt or products made for people. Dog "good bacteria" and human are not the same. If you can't get Fortiflora quickly enough than you can use any product made for dogs. As for taking the two antibiotics at once, yes, those are commonly given together and work well together. You can continue with the ProPectalin, however that does not fight the cause of the diarrhea and only lessens the symptoms. Norik will need to finish his course of antibiotics and probiotics and if the condition does not resolve then he will need to go back to the vet for a more intensive work up of his gastro-intestinal problems. This may include examining his poop, possibly culturing it, x-rays to see whether there is a problem with his intestines, and possibly a biopsy. So, for now finish the medications, keep feeding the bland diet and then have your veterinarian reassess your dog.

When my patients have diarrhea after antibiotics I will usually prescribe a canine specific probiotic to help get the good bacteria loaded back up in the GI tract. My favorite is Proviable and it also comes with a paste to help firm up the stools. My second favorite is Fortiflora. I would encourage you to call your veterinarian and discuss the possibility of using one of these products. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.

The change is stool color is probably from the medication or new supplement. It doesn’t look like it is from blood from the photo. As long as he’s feeling fine finish the antibiotics and check the stool after they are done. It should go back to his normal stool color. I would continue the antibiotics until they are gone. When you are almost done with the antibiotics I would have your vet recheck her feces to ensure all of the campy is gone. Sometimes it takes more than one course of meds to get completely rid of the bacteria. Also you can add In a probiotics which will help to build up fit immunity. Also, make sure she isn’t going back outside and reinfecting herself by eating dirt or drinking stagnant water. I hope this helps

Riley’s stool looks a bit soft. This may be be from being on doxycycline as antibiotic associated diarrhea is fairly common. Your vet may be able to dispense a probiotic such as FortiFlora or Proviable that can help return the stool to normal. The blood may be due to stress colitis. Typically, metronidazole (flagyl) is an anti-inflammatory antibiotic for the gut that recommended for blood tinged soft stool, however as she just finished a course of antibiotics, putting her on probiotics and a plain boiled rice and chicken diet (unless she has an allergy to chicken) or a prescription Hills intestinal diet or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal diet for 3-5 days may be enough to allow the irritated intestinal mucosa to heal.
