Why is my dog's poop dark after starting antibiotics and omega-3?

Without seeing the stools myself it is hard for me to say. What you may consider black I may consider normal dark brown color. It may just be their GI tract getting used to processing the new food. If they are acting normally I would not be overly concerned. Omegas are regularly recommended and are usually pretty benign to give however, they can interfere with clotting if not given the correct dose. Are you giving them a product made for dogs? If not, I suggest you do that. Humans and dogs need different ratios of the Omega 3 to Omega 6. Hope this helps. Dark stool is usually not a problem unless the stool looks tarry. Tarry looking stool contains digested blood which could be from feeding raw meat, or stomach or intestinal bleeds. Apoquel's most common side effects are vomiting and diarrhea. Intestinal or stomach bleeding is not listed. If you are also giving other medications this will need to be investigated. Please take a stool sample to your vet if you suspect it has a tarry appearance, If the stool is just dark brown, it is quite normal and nothing to worry about.

Hello, sorry to hear about Danny. It does indeed look like his stools may be darker than normal. This may be associated with the use of clindamycin as this antibiotic can cause soft stools and GI upset. Now that you have stopped it, his stools should return to normal within the next few days. If they don't, then you will need to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as he may need some probiotics. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello. A dark discoloration of urine is a common finding when patients are on Metronidazole. The stool discoloration is most certainly due to a change in diet. The urine will return to normal once the antibiotics are finished & his stools should normalize once his GI tract gets used to the new food. I do hope Marshall is beginning to feel better. This can be caused by imbalance of the bacteria in the gut due to the antibiotics, if they have been given for another condition. This can also be caused by severe parasitic infections, bacterial infections, and conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. I recommend having Oliver seen by the vet who prescribed the antibiotics, as they may recommend a probiotic to add to his treatment, or discontinue/switch the antibiotics.

Black stools is usually a sign of bleeding from the stomach or small intestines, it's definitely not a good sign and is not likely to be due to the antibiotics. i would recommend taking Curt back to the vet ASAP for re-evaluation of the situation.

It is hard to know without being able to look at the feces, but if this truly is not blood in the feces, the reddish tinge is most likely due to pigment in the food or something he ate causing that change.
