Missed dog's campylobacter antibiotic dose: poop bad again. What to do?

Campylobacter is an intestinal bacterium that can infect people as well. Antibiotics will usually clear up the infection. Make sure you wash your hands well after handling your dog. Do not let your dog sniff or eat his own feces, and you might want to get some moist wipes and wipe his bum after he did his business. Throw the wipes away (inaccessible to the dog or children), and wash your hands. This should clear up with the antibiotics in a relatively short time.

In dogs, currently erythromycin is considered the drug of choice in treating campylobacter. That being said, we are seeing cases with drug resistance with this bacteria, so ideally a culture and sensitivity is performed to determine the best drug in each individual situation. This is a bacteria that can also make humans ill, so precautions should be taken to prevent transmission including good hygeine/hand washing and avoiding the pet being around people with suppressed immune systems. When my patients have diarrhea after antibiotics I will usually prescribe a canine specific probiotic to help get the good bacteria loaded back up in the GI tract. My favorite is Proviable and it also comes with a paste to help firm up the stools. My second favorite is Fortiflora. Hazel is adorable! Antibiotics are the treatment of choice for campylobaacter in dogs. Did your vet not prescribe any? It is not really a treatment for it but it will reduce the shedding of the bacteria from her. One packet on her food daily. I would treat her for one month minimum (one box = 30 days). Csmpylobacter is typically obtained by ingesting infected feces, food or water. It is hard to say the exact source of infection. It is typically not fatal and is treatable. If this has been diagnosed already, continue any medications that were recommended to you. Hi. I would recommend adding a spoonful of canned pumpkin to each meal to increase fiber. You can also add boiled rice. If that doesn't help, i would recommend talking with your veterinarian about possibly getting him on metronidazole to help firm up the stools. Good luck

Most accurately though would be to treat the infection based on a culture but it would be acceptable to try to treat with cephalexin if your veterinarian agrees that that is appropriate based on Moti's medical history.
