Can my small dog eat regular-sized kibble instead of small breed?

Yes, it is fine to feed Kiba a food that is larger kibble! In fact, feeding larger kibble makes dogs chew a little more, which is great for preventing tartar build up on their teeth. Just watch Kiba the first few times that you feed it to make sure that he is chewing well and doesn't seem to have any choking from swallowing large pieces.

Hi there and thank you for your post! The size of kibble may make it easier for a smaller dog to eat if the kibble bites are smaller. Sometimes, depending on the dog and Its preference for texture, some small dogs prefer large bites over small bites and some dogs prefer small bites over large bite. Hello, both dog foods are good brands. It may be a difference in ingredients and quality of ingredients which fits better for Chloe. Both formulas are made to meet the AAFCO standards and regulations for pet food, meaning they are both balanced and will provide adequate nutritional support for Chloe. The difference in these two foods mainly has to do with price and brand. Natural Balance is still considered a good brand of food and one of the most used and well known brands of commercial dog food. Chloe can have Natural Balance if she does better on it. That's a great way to plan ahead! As a Havanese, Kiba could eat either of the diets you mentioned with no adverse consequences. However, if his puppy food is lamb based, I would be more inclined to try the small breed lamb based diet so as not to change protein sources. I always recommend starting with a small bag of the new food in the chance that Kiba either won't eat it or develops stomach upset from the new diet. Anytime you change to a new diet, please do so by gradually mixing the foods together over 5-7 days.

Small breed food should not do any harm to a medium breed dog unless he has any specific medical conditions which require him to be on a specialised prescription food. Food for larger breeds can be supplemented for joint health and made with larger kibble for dental health so you may be loosing these benefits depending on the brand you are feeding

Decreasing her eating amount after a growth spurt is normal. They probably recommended large breed puppy so she wouldn’t grow to fast which can cause bone problems. Once she’s full grown I recommend regular adult food. No reason to do either large breed or small breed since she will be medium size. I don’t think grain free food is worth it. I like a well balanced dog food such as Hills. They do research on their food and include the optimum amount of nutrients, rather than excess. Your breed could become overweight so please adjust the quantity of food to keep her on the lean side. Hills does have some Natural foods, and many speciality foods such as those for sensitive skin and stomach, joints, weight management, and for medical problems also. My dogs start on Hills and stay on for life, changing the specific food as they grow, and even into their senior years, or with medical problems. There is a lot of advertising to sell different dog foods but I like to base my choice on scientific research, not hype. The nutritional profiles for both of these foods is very similar. I have no preference, but I have had heard several positive reviews about Fromm from my clients. What I would recommend is that you choose one (just go with your gut!) and feed it for 1 week. If Chloe doesn't like eating it, has vomiting or diarrhea, less energy, a dull haircoat, etc then it may not be a good match for her body. Then you could try the other (or a different food).
