Should my Havanese eat small breed adult food or regular adult?

Great question! Because Ohu is a small breed dog, I would recommend feeding him the Hill's Small Paws adult food. It's an excellent food for small breed dogs like Ohu. I do recommend slowly transitioning from his puppy food to his new adult food to avoid stomach upset. To do this, feed him 75% old food, 25% new food for three to four days, then give him 50% old, 50% new. Again feed this mixture for three to four days, then feed him 25% old food, 75% new food. After feeding him this mixture for another three to four days, give him 100% of the new food. If he does have any stomach upset during this time, such as diarrhea, increase the amount of old food and decrease the amount of new food until the diarrhea is resolved, then continue to increase the amount of new food. A Havenese should weigh between 7-13 pounds fully grown, so based on that, it could be that Kiba is a bit bigger. Now, he's a puppy, and because he's still growing, I don't recommend introducing any diets as they may interfere with his growth. To keep him from getting overweight, I would cut out all treats. Kiba shouldn't be getting treats every day, as a treat should only be an occasional thing. For now, however, no more treats, cheese, or chews. Just his dog food twice a day, feed according to the package instructions, and make sure that he gets exercise twice a day for at least 20-30 minutes :-)

I would not recommend pupy food for adult dogs unless absolutely no alternative is available. Puppy formulas tend to be higher in minerals and proteins for growth and are richer than recommended for regular maintenance diets

Depending on how big the Chiweenie is as an adult, you could likely use the same food for both dogs after they are each 1 year old. Since Sara is only 35lbs, you don’t need to give her a large breed dog food. The other pup is likely not extra small (under 10lbs) so it would be fine to eat a regular food as well. Stick with any of the high quality brands who do not have recall issues frequently. Brands who have frequent recalls are concerning for quality issues. I recommend Royal Canin, Iams, Purina Pro Plan, and Nutro. Just get the normal, adult dog food. Remember to transition to the new diet over 5-7 days. Yes, it is fine to feed Kiba a food that is larger kibble! In fact, feeding larger kibble makes dogs chew a little more, which is great for preventing tartar build up on their teeth. Just watch Kiba the first few times that you feed it to make sure that he is chewing well and doesn't seem to have any choking from swallowing large pieces.

These are science diet, royal canin and purina pro plan. Only these three Have undergone detailed research to ensure they provide an adequate and nutritious diet for pets. Decreasing her eating amount after a growth spurt is normal. They probably recommended large breed puppy so she wouldn’t grow to fast which can cause bone problems. Once she’s full grown I recommend regular adult food. No reason to do either large breed or small breed since she will be medium size. I don’t think grain free food is worth it. I like a well balanced dog food such as Hills. They do research on their food and include the optimum amount of nutrients, rather than excess. Your breed could become overweight so please adjust the quantity of food to keep her on the lean side. Hills does have some Natural foods, and many speciality foods such as those for sensitive skin and stomach, joints, weight management, and for medical problems also. My dogs start on Hills and stay on for life, changing the specific food as they grow, and even into their senior years, or with medical problems. There is a lot of advertising to sell different dog foods but I like to base my choice on scientific research, not hype.
