My Chihuahua is sick, sugar water not working. Is it an emergency?

I recommend taking Poppy into an ER clinic. It sounds like she is getting dehydrated and likely needs fluids and other medication to make her feel better. She could have a stomach infection, pancreas issues or even kidney problems. Some cases need lab tests, some xrays, others both, to find out exactly what is wrong. Once the veterinarian diagnoses Poppy they can review a treatment plan to help her feel better.

I am concerned about these symptoms. I think you should get Poppy Seed checked out by a vet ASAP. They aren't consistent with any one disease process, but it is still concerning. Young, tiny breed dogs are prone to hypoglycemia, so I would feed her some honey or caro syrup (or place it in her cheek if she won't lick it) to help prevent hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia is a big problem in small breed puppies. At 10 weeks old I would worried about that and also it could be that he has a liver problem (shunt) or a cardiac issue. Teddy may need more testing to figure out what is going on. An ultrasound may be taken of the abdomen to try and identify a pancreatic, liver or other type of tumor that could cause hypoglycemia. Puppies and adult dogs that appear to be in a stupor or coma during a hypoglycemic attack should immediately be given sugar water or an oral concentrated solution of glucose, such as corn (Karo) syrup or Nutri-Cal. Rub it directly on his gums. The sugar will be absorbed directly through the tissue into the bloodstream. You should add two tablespoons Karo syrup to your puppy’s water for all day sipping. Be sure to dump out and add fresh each day or the sugar water could grow bacteria. Schedule several meals every day. Toy breed adults and any young puppy have trouble eating enough food at one setting. So a small meal several times a day helps keep the blood sugar levels normal. I hope this helps. Poor pup! This sounds like a potentially serious problem, so I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic today to be seen. He may have a neurologic problem of some kind, may have injured himself somehow, or may have ingested something toxic. The ER veterinarian can do a completely neurologic exam and may recommend blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help figure out what's wrong. If you're not sure where to go, try calling your regular vet's office - their voicemail message should have contact information for your nearest ER or an on-call doctor for emergencies.

She could be hypoglycemic. Small breed dogs should eat more frequent, smaller meals throughout the day as to not let their blood sugar drop. I suggest you do this and if she is still not acting normally she should see a vet.

Hello. I am sorry to hear that Sugar is feeling so sick. When a puppy is lying around, not eating or drinking they are usually very ill. This may be either an infection (like Parvo), a problem she was born with (a congenital problem), or possibly something she ate or got into. I understand you are short on finances. Please offer Sugar some baby food directly into her mouth. If she will not take baby food from you and has not eaten all day her blood sugar may get dangerously low. You should see if she can lick up a small amount of karo syrup to try and increase her blood sugar level. If at all possible I would get her to an emergency veterinarian tonight to have her assessed. At least an exam can give you a lot of information about her vitals and they can lead you in the right direction to try and get her better. I hope the best for her.

This not good . It appears Chiquita is in respiratory distress and that is always an emergency. Please take her to an emergency room (Pet ER) right away. The signs are too unspecific to pinpoint a cause over the internet. The vet will want to do blood tests and a chest x-ray to determine why Chiquita can't breathe normally and is weak.
