My 7-month-old Chihuahua can't stand or walk. Is it an emergency?

Oh dear! I'm afraid this sounds like a serious problem. If Oreo seems paralyzed on one side, cannot stand up, and is not eating, he needs to be taken to an emergency clinic right away to be seen. He may have sustained some type of head trauma or ingested something toxic, or may have a serious neurologic disease such as meningitis or encephalomyelitis. The ER veterinarian can do a complete neurologic exam to help determine what is causing his symptoms, and may also recommend blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem so he can be started on appropriate treatment.

This could also be a problem within his inner ear and vestibular system. These disturbances can happen with drug or poison ingestion, infections, or a physical abnormality within the brain or spinal cord due to trauma, or a tumor. Jake is behaving this way because he is either confused, or in a great amount of pain and distress. Given the possibility of a life-threatening complication, I recommend you take Jake to the emergency vet as soon as you can. They can help find the cause of this and provide the necessary treatment. Not being able to walk all of a sudden is an emergency and you need to take Paris to your vet now. If this is caused by a prolapsed disc, then time is of the essence, ie treatment with NSAIDs, pain medication and strict cage rest as early as possible increases the chance of recuperation. There can be other reasons for not being able to walk, and only a hands-on exam will facilitate a diagnosis. Your vet will want to do radiographs, possibly blood tests and do a thorough orthopedic and neurological exam.

Poor guy. It sounds like Noddy has a serious issue affecting his neurological system or his musculoskeletal system. He needs to be seen right away by your nearest veterinarian for medications to help stabilize his condition. There unfortunately isn't anything you can give him at home for this type of condition, so it is best to take him in right away for bloodwork and potential x-rays to check for any signs of arthritis or degenerative joint disease that may explain his symptoms and offer a reasonable treatment plan to help him.

Hi. I'm sorry Chupa hurt herself. If she is dragging her rear legs she needs to be seems by a vet asap. She may have a back or spinal cord injury. If she can stand and move both legs she may be ok with a bit of rest but if she is dragging her legs at all or wobbly on them then she needs to be checked by a vet. In the meantime don't let her jump up or down on furniture, make sure to carry her up and down stairs and keep her confined to a small area or crate. I hope Chupa is better soon.
